In this rare image shot at speed, we see four hot rodders in the summer of 1940 having the time of their lives as they run together into the early morning sun on their way to a dry lakes meet. We love how the rugged and harsh conditions, along with the well-used look of the deuce-shell'd model A roadster at left, seem to match perfectly with the rugged condition of this well-used and much-abused old photograph. Although the completely stripped down โ30 or '31 roadster at left looks like it has already had an excursion or two out on to that alkaline surface, the nicely turned out โ29 roadster with full hood and deuce shell at right would be considered a highly finished roadster in its day. The shiny paint combined with hubcaps and trim rings tells you that its owner was going for a more presentable and respectable machine that could pull double duty as both street racer and dinner date shuttle, while the fact that he has kept the splash aprons and running boards in place speaks to the possibility that the owner may live in a more congested area where fender laws and motorcycle cops combine to be a bit of a factor. Either way, we love how these two roadsters perfectly represent the two types of roadsters ( and roadster owners ) that were prevalent during the pre-war years- on the left we see the open and carefree enthusiasm of a couple of teens who just want to go fast, while on the right we see a couple of older and more seasoned enthusiasts who have graduated to a more refined approach but still want to be part of the action. Our hat is off to the person who thought to capture this moment from what looks to be the rumble seat of a mid โ30s passenger car ( complete with covered spare in the immediate foreground ) and to regular AHRF contributor, Joel Driskill, for sharing this great find with us.
