āThe Mimosa That Changed Everythingā
I was at a Chamber event one morning over 15+ years agoā¦
You know the kindā
āpeople shaking hands, exchanging cards, networking.ā
I arrive and immediately walk up to the bar, order a mimosa because I was about to do a presentation for the first time in front of a large audience, and my nerves were on edgeā¦.
Weāre talking -one month in a new industry, one I didnāt know a single person, I didnāt know a strategy I didnāt know the business. I didnāt even understand what I was doing. I just knew I wanted to give it a try. ļæ¼
And thereās a gentleman sitting to my right.
So I do what people often overlook, an opportunity to break the iceā¦..
I introduce myself.
We start talking.
At that time, I was only about 1 month into my NEW career in sales and business development.
Still finding my footingā¦.
Still thinking I needed better scripts, better lines, better ways to āclose. Maybe I need an elevator speech. ļæ¼
So I ask him a simple question:
āTell me a little about yourself.ā
He pauses⦠smiles⦠and says:
āI started as a teller.ā
And Iām thinkingāokayā¦
Then he continues:
āAnd now Iām the CEO of the bank.ā
That caught my attention.
Because Iām sitting there thinking:
Thereās no script in the world that takes you from teller⦠to CEO.
So I leaned in and asked him a question that changed everything for me:
āIf there was one thing you could tell meācoming into this world of sales and business developmentāwhat would it be?ā
He didnāt hesitate.
He looked right at me and said:
āItās not about selling⦠itās about building relationships.ā
Simple.
Almost too simple.
And honestly? At that timeā¦
I didnāt fully get it.
Because I was still thinking:
āYeah, but what do I say?ā
āWhat do I do?ā
āHow do I close?ā
But over time⦠I realized something powerful.
That moment at the bar wasnāt just advice.
It was a shortcut most people ignore.
Because hereās what he really meant:
He didnāt become CEO because he was the best salesperson.
He became CEO because:
⢠People trusted him
⢠People believed him
⢠People wanted to do business with him
And that changed how I approached everything.
A week later I walked into Teichert constructions office a week later I landed the entire northern California account. The company I worked for spent years trying to get this account. I did it in one day. I wasnāt special I just took the advice I received a week prior by a CEO .ļæ¼
When I went on to help businesses grow from $500,000 to $4 million in under three yearsā¦
It wasnāt because we had better pitches.
It was because we built:
š Stronger relationships
š Deeper trust
š Real connection
When I stepped into leadership during a $45 million acquisitionā¦
It wasnāt about āsellingā anything.
It was about alignment.
It was about people believing in the direction.
And thatās when it all came full circle.
Because what that CEO told me at a bar over a mimosaā¦
Was the same truth operating at every level:
People donāt buy because you convinced them.
They buy because they trust the relationship they have with you.
So if youāre in sales & business development ā¦
Stop asking:
āWhat do I say next?ā
āWhat Sales course do i take up my game?ā ļæ¼
And start asking:
āHow do I become someone people want to keep saying yes to?ā
Because the moment you understand thatā¦
Sales stops feeling like pressure, sales stops being about the āsaleā.
And starts feeling like momentum.
It becomes about building community building relationships building something that lasts a lifetime .
Iāve spent the last 17 years building, learning, leaning in and understanding what works and what doesnāt work.
Iāve had failures and successes ā but one thing for sure, I understand how to get in front of the audience regardless of the industry.
Why? I understand what it requires to build those relationships, I understand how to get in front of decision-makers.
