Rally Story: Mongolia — The Beginning

A dealership showroom. A motorcycle that no one had bought in two years. Suzuki DR800S Big — 779cc single cylinder, ugly enough that the sales guys had probably written it off in their heads.

I looked at it and thought: "That's the one."

Before that, I had a cruiser — a Suzuki Boulevard. Beautiful, chrome, proper. I sold it and bought this beast. Because it had a 24-liter tank and the DNA of the Dakar-racing DR-Z that Gaston Rahier rode across Africa.

When I fired it up for the first time — it was something else. Engines shouldn't sound like that. Like someone shoved a liter of nails into a washing machine. Bzzzdynnnn-ning-ning.

Three months later I was riding it through the Gobi Desert. But I didn't know that yet.

#1
DEMPSTER HIGHWAY — Yukon to Northwest Territories, Canada 🇨🇦

There are roads you ride just to get somewhere, and there are roads that become the journey. The Dempster Highway is definitely the second kind — a wild, remote track stretching nearly 900 km from Dawson City all the way to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk.
📍 Quick facts:
• Length: ~890 km (553 miles)
• Surface: gravel, rock, and calcium chloride dust
• Difficulty: 4/5
• Remoteness: 5/5
• Best season: mid-June to early September
• Arctic Circle crossing at km 405
• Ends at Tuktoyaktuk — yes, you can actually ride to the Arctic Ocean

🗺️ The route:
Dawson City → Tombstone Mountains → Arctic Circle → Eagle Plains → Richardson Mountains → Fort McPherson → Inuvik → Tuktoyaktuk

⛽ Fuel & services:
Dawson City – everything you need before heading north.
Eagle Plains (km 370) – the only full-service stop in the middle of nowhere.
Fort McPherson – small station, limited hours.
Inuvik – multiple fuel spots, restaurants, mechanics.
Tuktoyaktuk – small station at the end of the world.
Longest stretch without full refuel: about 370 km. Plan well.

🪨 Road conditions:
Mostly gravel and crushed stone — smooth when dry, but after rain it turns into slick clay. Expect trucks. Take your time.

🌄 The land:
Southern Yukon offers dramatic peaks and tundra valleys around Tombstone Range. Farther north, the land opens into endless tundra plains with rivers and the rugged Richardson Mountains on the horizon — some of the best scenery you’ll ever ride through.

🌦️ Weather:
This is the Arctic. Even in July, temperatures range from +5°C to +18°C. Wind, rain, fog — expect all of it, sometimes in one day.
🏍️ How to ride it:
• Fast push: Dawson → Tuktoyaktuk in one day (~12–14 hours, 900 km).
• Classic rally: 2 days – overnight in Eagle Plains.
• Expedition style: 3–4 days – time to stop, explore, and breathe it all in.

⚠️ Things to watch: mud after rain, strong crosswinds, trucks, long fuel gaps, wildlife.

🔧 Recommended bikes: KTM 890 Adventure, Yamaha Tenere 700, Honda Africa Twin.

🛞 Tires: 50/50 adventure setup — TKC80, Motoz Tractionator, Mitas E09.

📖 In short:
The Dempster isn’t just a road — it’s a ride every adventure rider dreams of. Remote, raw, and unforgettable.
