I’m devastated and really need help brainstorming. In October, I got 4 chicks to add to my existing mixed flock — 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes and 2 Bielefelders. They were sweet, friendly, and had been laying for a few months.
Last month, one of the Wyandottes died out of nowhere. I found her feet-up in the dust bath area, still warm, with clear fluid coming from her mouth. She had laid an egg that morning, and she looked perfectly healthy when I checked her over. No mites, no injuries, no missing feathers, no obvious issue. Since she was pretty small, I wondered if it could have been a heart problem or something internal.
Today, one of the Bielefelders from the same group died almost the exact same way. She was still warm and looked completely healthy. My brother, who is a butcher and loves to tell me when I’m wrong, checked her over thoroughly and couldn’t find anything wrong either.
She was free ranging and found near the back of the coop by the feed room. No punctures, no missing feathers, no sign of predator damage, and we have a livestock guardian dog.
Is this a coincidence, or is there something I should be checking for immediately? I have 25 birds and I’m scared I’m going to lose more. Any ideas are appreciated. 💔🐔
