Madison Warhawks Dismantle the previously Undefeated Chantilly Chargers 31-7
Ry Yates led a powerful Madison Warhawk Football team that just throttled Chantilly (6-0 going into the game) for 4 quarters straight. Ry threw 2 touchdown passes (8 Yards, Colin Tuft,) and (7 Yards, Cole Remy) both in the first quarter. He passed for 124 yards completing 11 of 22 passes on the night. Alex Jreige rushed for 74 yards on the night and Brendan Wyka had 21 yards. That was enough as Alex Jreige scored a rushing touchdown in the fourth and Ry Yates scored one on the ground in the second. Madison finished off the Chargers 31 to 7 in Coach Sean Curry's first loss of 2019.
This was the first time I got to see James Pogorelc in person. He is more athletic than most linemen and has the potential to be great. He had one pancake block last night that I noticed. I only saw two plays where the defender he was blocking got close to the ball. But, the problem for Chantilly last night was that Madison had 10 more players on the field. They swarmed the Charger offense and created a thick briar patch that Chantilly wanted no part of.
Great performance by Sophomore Defensive Tackle Ryan Salvosa. He's tough and fights like a dog. Sammy Serantos was in on just about every tackle. He's big and pushes his weight around. Strong game by Nero Schrader, and Dolan Cromley. Madison might be the best 5-3 team in the state. Definitely in Northern Virginia. They have played a brutal schedule. Their opponent winning percentage is just under 79%. Westfield has played opponents with a 55.7 % winning percentage so far this year and SOCO 42%. They have somewhat of a dirty record when you compare them with the undefeateds, but the three teams they lost to this year are all 7-0 right now. The one they beat last night would have been 7-0 right now had Madison not left no doubt.
Sean Curry's team will butter their bread if they go right in behind Pogorelc, blasting the power off tackle as this Chantilly program was notorious for over the decades. They've got a talent like him with size that just creates match up problems for anyone and they need to utilize that. He is the real deal. I spoke with James about colleges. I asked him about the 24/7 sports prediction that he will attend Stanford, and he made it clear, "I'm not close to making a decision on where I will attend." Both of James parents are engineers and He is looking for a school where he feels comfortable and where the quality of the education will be the priority.
Can't say enough about the effort that Madison gave last night. Few games in high school pack quite the surprise that this one did and Justin Counts is a fine coach who is soft spoken and a great example for the young men he leads. The schedules look almost identical for these two teams going forward for the next two weeks. Both have Oakton at home followed by Centreville. Chantilly has them next week and then Centreville followed by their biggest game of the year. The play Westfield on the road, November 8.
