"Cordae, in collaboration with Rock The Bells and M&M's, joined forces for the HBCU School of Music Campaign, announced in December 2023. This campaign aimed to honor and celebrate the impact of HBCUs on Hip-Hop's legacy and culture. The partnership also allowed Cordae to give back to HBCUs by mentoring students. He expressed his admiration for Hip-Hop and LL COOL J, and how this opportunity was a no-brainer for him.

The campaign saw four students from different HBCUs, Zeke, JJ Siegel, Michael Randolph, and Khaylah Jones, producing Cordae's performance at the National Museum of African American Music in October 2023. Cordae, who recently became a father, said fatherhood has greatly influenced his desire to preserve Black culture in academic spaces and beyond. He emphasized the importance of investing in Black youth and education. In terms of his music, Cordae promised to release more music in 2024 and to always have something worth hearing.

Florida A&M University has a long history of educating African Americans, but a new law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis is causing concern among students and faculty. The law, which prohibits the use of taxpayer money for diversity programs and restricts the teaching of certain theories, has sparked protests on campus. Students are worried that their education will be limited and certain viewpoints will be silenced.

Governor DeSantis claims that the law is meant to combat "woke" indoctrination on college campuses, but critics argue that it is an attack on diversity and inclusion efforts. The law has also raised fears among faculty of color, with some worried about losing their jobs if they speak out against it. Despite these challenges, Florida A&M remains committed to providing an excellent education to its students, but some worry that underfunding and political pressure could make it difficult for the university to maintain its commitment to social justice.

NBA star Ja Morant recently showed his support for the men's and women's basketball teams at Miles College by providing them with new gear. The Golden Bears were outfitted in Morant's signature Nike Ja 1 sneakers, thanks to the efforts of Miles' coach Fred Watson and his friendship with Tee Morant, Ja's father. Morant personally reached out to the student-athletes to offer words of encouragement and support. The team debuted their new gear on Dec. 30 and ended up beating Rust College. This gesture by Morant showcases the positive impact that sports figures can have on young athletes and their communities.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation and HBCU program celebrated the 20th anniversary of their Leadership Summit, which brought together 32 HBCU students to nurture their leadership abilities and promote LGBTQ+ advocacy on their campuses. The summit has evolved over the years, but its focus on empowering students and creating a supportive environment for identity development remains consistent. This was evident in the story of a transgender man from Spelman College who transitioned on campus, attended the summit, and has since been working at HRC.

One unique aspect of the summit is its incorporation of ballroom culture into the curriculum. This not only educates students on LGBTQ+ history but also facilitates their ability to work with diverse people. The summit concluded with attendees returning to their campuses with enhanced leadership skills, a deeper understanding of their identities, and a renewed passion for promoting change. HBCU Director Leslie Hall emphasized the importance of the summit in providing a safe and empowering space for students who may not have had such an experience before.

The Biden-Harris administration has announced a $600 million grant to 11 Grantmakers to support Environmental Justice Programs nationwide. Texas Southern University will receive $50 million to fund its Bullard Center for Environmental & Climate Justice, founded by Dr. Robert D. Bullard. The grant was announced by Vice President Kamala Harris and EPA administrator Michael S. Regan, who emphasized the administration's commitment to addressing environmental inequalities and promoting equity. This grant is also part of the EPA's partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to address environmental issues affecting underserved and overburdened communities across the country.

The Bullard Center at Texas Southern University focuses on addressing systemic inequality and structural racism that disproportionately affect Black and POC communities. Through its various programs, the Center aims to promote education, research, civil engagement, networking, and technical assistance related to environmental and climate issues. The Center's Academy also provides mentoring opportunities for students, faculty, and community leaders, with the goal of increasing representation in environmental and climate education and careers. The grant is a significant step towards creating a future where every person in America has equal access to clean air, water, and a healthy life. The funding will be awarded by Summer 2024, and more information can be found on the EPA website and the Bullard Center's website.

Grambling State's women's basketball team made history on Tuesday night with their record-breaking 141-point victory over The College of Biblical Studies. Led by Arianna Mosley's 27 points and Kahia Warmsley's 20 points, the Tigers dominated the game with a strong display of depth and skill from their entire team. In addition to Mosley and Warmsley's impressive performance, players like Amanda Blake, DeMya Young, and Jordaynia Ivie also contributed double-digit points to the team's win. The Tigers' victory brings their record to 6-5 for the season, and they are looking to continue their success as they head into Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

This is not the first time Grambling State has dominated their opponents this season. They began the year with a 93-48 win over Champion Christian College and followed it with a 109-41 victory over Wiley College. However, their win against CBS sets a new record for the biggest victory in Division I women's basketball history, surpassing the previous record set in 2018. Despite CBS's struggles this season, Grambling State's impressive performance showcases their strength as a team and their determination to succeed. The Tigers will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming game against Prairie View A&M and continue their successful season.

Repost:

Brooke Hart Jones, a third-generation HBCU graduate, had an unlocked passion and talent that was revealed during the pandemic. After being furloughed from her job as a toy buyer for Dave & Busters, Jones created 'HBCYou Dolls'. These dolls are a representation of women attending or planning to attend HBCUs, and are a third of the price of American Girl Dolls. Jones also wanted to make sure the dolls represented the culture of HBCUs: majors, career aspirations, leadership and interests. As of right now, the dolls only represent seven of the 107 HBCUs, but Jones is hoping to expand to more schools going into 2024. Her goal is to make HBCYou Dolls a household name and continue to represent the women of HBCUs.

Through HBCyoU Dolls Brooke shares the magic and legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities with children far and wide.

Partnered with Purpose Toys, Brooke joins “A Community of Black Founders, Executives and Creatives”, who supportn one and other by providing the infrastructure and resouces needed to succeed in business. Our motto at Purpose, is to provide “Product with a Purpose”, which Brooke proudly delivers with HBCyoU Dolls.

The Willie Simmons-Manny Diaz deal has left the Florida A&M alumni association at a loss, but Athletic Director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is determined to find a coach that can carry on the success Simmons had in his three-plus seasons in Tallahassee.

Fred McNair, currently an unwilling pawn in Texas Southern's game of chess, is the ideal candidate. He boasts a proven track record of success, an eye for talent and a penchant for discipline. FAMU is a proud institution that has high expectations for its athletics programs and are willing to put resources behind those expectations. If hired, McNair can look forward to organized, enthusiastic, proactive, aggressive and supportive environment, as well as several more trips to the Celebration Bowl.

What are your thoughts? Some say McNair is the perfect fit; others say different. Let us know in the comments where you stand.

Simmons expressed his admiration for Diaz and the program he wants to run, and believes the rigorous academic component of Duke University will help elevate his career. David E. Talbert, director, writer and producer of Jingle Jangle and Almost Christmas, has launched HBCU Next, a fellowship program that will bring aspiring filmmakers from HBCUs to the USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) Summer Program. The program, created and funded by Talbert and his wife and producing partner Lyn Sisson-Talbert, provides career insights and creative skills to develop more authentic portrayals of Black experiences and culture. It also seeks to foster an environment for cultural exchange between HBCU and USC students. Through HBCU Next, students gain access to courses in animation, producing, editing, gaming and more, and are mentored by Talbert in directing and screenwriting.

The program's first two participants, Directing/Producing Fellow Sha-Shonna Rogers and Screenwriting Fellow Imani Mullings, are current students at Morgan State University. They have received full tuition, housing and round-trip airfare to attend the 2023 Summer Program at the USC School of Cinematic Arts campus in Los Angeles. Through this program, Talbert hopes to bridge the gap of access that has kept people of Color from finding their way in the industry. He is also planning a roster of HBCU graduates to speak at HBCU Next including Forest Whitaker, Tim Story, Ruth Carter, J.B. Smoove and Anika Noni Rose. With this fellowship, Talbert is providing a platform for the diverse voices and rich cultural narratives of talented HBCU students, and helping to create the next generation of trailblazers in the entertainment industry.

The 40th Annual Mayor's Masked Ball, organized by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, raised an impressive $4 million to support the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). This record-breaking event was held to encourage students to attend HBCUs and to advocate for them. Atlanta is home to four member HBCUs.

Justine Boyd, the UNCF Assistant Vice President, expressed her appreciation for the event, noting that “it was a true testament to the power of unity and philanthropy—a night where success took center stage as the community came together to support Black higher education and empower the next generation."

Thanks to this fundraiser, nearly 300 students received scholarships from the fund last year. The UNCF also helps approximately 50,000 students attend college on an annual basis.

Video: Committed to improving the game for future generations to come, Tiger Woods provides insight into perfecting a mini draw with a Prairie View A&M golfer.

_______

Tiger Woods, a PGA Tour Hall of Famer, has shifted his focus from professional golf to an ambassador role. As part of his relationship with Bridgestone golf, he recently met with golfers from Prairie View A&M's Women's golf team and Florida A&M's Men's golf team at Cape Club of Palm City in Georgia. His interactions with the players were incredibly meaningful, and he has also been instrumental in inviting HBCU golfers Willie Mack III and Kamaiu Johnson to play on the PGA Tour. His work as an ambassador has enabled these golfers to have unique and rewarding experiences, and his commitment to HBCU golfers is admirable.

FAMU head coach Mike Rice talked about the experience his team had with Woods. "He was larger than life to meet. He was cordial and took his time with my team," Rice said. " Watching him interact with them was just amazing to watch. He was not in a hurry, he didn't rush things. He actually went over the time. His assistants told him that he had another event to attend and he told them he would leave once all the players got all their questions out to him and not before. A star at that level doing that shows you the importance he put open the interaction with the players."

12/26/2023

Texas Southern University (TSU) is in the midst of a dispute over their head coach hiring process. The board of supervisors and the administration of the school have been at odds over the candidacy of former Alcorn State University head coach Fred McNair. Despite a majority of board members being in favor of McNair, there is a minority that is pushing for the hiring of future Hall of Fame wide receiver and former Houston Texan Andre Johnson. The disagreement has led to multiple failed votes and it has caused the school to remain without a head coach as of national signing day (Dec 21st). Although McNair appears to be the easy choice due to his track record of wins and the university's history of being a losing football program, some are comparing Johnson to Deion Sanders, who spent time at an HBCU and elevated the program to unprecedented heights. With both sides having strong arguments, it is yet to be seen which candidate will be the chosen one.

Here is what we know:
1. Texas Southern's head coach search committee recommended Fred McNair as its "top choice" for the position.
2. Dr. Kevin Granger submitted his name to the interim president.
3. According to a source, the Board of Regents had planned a "Special Meeting" for Friday, December 15, 2023, at 10:00 AM CT to approve a four-year, $313,000 annual contract. However, the required quorum was not achieved.
4. Interim AD Robert Raines of Alcorn State University released a statement saying Coach McNair and the school "could not reach a mutual agreement" on a multi-year contract.
5. On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, the Board of Regents organized a "Special Meeting" at 12:30 PM CT, intending to endorse the contract for the head football coach. However, during the meeting, two members either failed to attend or disagreed with the selection. It's reported that those members have a preference for Andre Johnson as a potential candidate.

we'll keep you updated as we learn more.

Prairie View A&M University had quite an eventful year! As an end-of-year recap, PVAMU compiled a list of 15 note-worthy moments from their 2023 calendar. Listed as "Moment 14", the grand opening of a new building within the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering marks the first new facility for the college in nearly two decades.

Back in June, Prairie View A&M University's Roy G. Perry College of Engineering opened it's new $70 million Engineering Classroom and Research Building (ENCARB). Designed by Stantec Architecture and built by Vaughn Construction, the 106,000 square foot facility offers state-of-the-art technical spaces, dedicated research lab space, six generalized instructional classrooms, and 14 specialized labs. The building also features a microgravity drop tower for research in space-related conditions. This new addition comes after a period of enrollment nearly doubling and is the College's first new facility in nearly two decades. With a focus on excellence, innovation, and practical application, the College is poised to produce more well-prepared graduates ready to tackle real-world challenges and provide solutions in an ever-evolving engineering landscape.

Congratulations to PVAMU on this and their other 14 significant moments of 2023. Continued success and development in the new year.
