SHAH RUKH KHAN..
Did You Know : Shah Rukh Khan's father, a tall and handsome 6'2" Pathan from Peshawar, was one of India's youngest freedom fighters. He held multiple degrees, spoke several languages, and had a great sense of humor. Although he pursued various professions like law, furniture, transportation, and later became a restaurateur and kerosene dealer in Delhi, he faced challenges throughout his career. On the other hand, Khan's mother was a remarkable woman from Hyderabad. She was not only a first-class magistrate educated at Oxford but also a dedicated social worker who collaborated with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. No wonder they have produced a child who is easily one of the most influential Indian all across the globe.

On M.F. Hussain’s 108th birthday on Sunday, veteran actress Saira Banu took a trip down memory lane and recalled how the Indian artist started sketching the portrait of late legendary star Dilip Kumar, who was having a high fever.

Saira took to Instagram, where she shared some throwback images of the artist and the actor.

She wrote: “Maqbool Fida Hussain was a dear friend and admirer of Sahib alongside other close friends. Often, they would meet at ‘The Taj Hotel Chambers’ for High Tea, Lunch, Dinners, and family functions at Home, and also at midnight when Pran Saab and Satish Bhalla would honk the horn outside our house asking Sahib to wake up for a midnight drive! Ooof! We wives have to exercise patience!”

She then jogged her memory and recalled: “I vividly remember Mr. Hussain’s visits to our home. Once Sahib had a high fever, and Mr. Hussain and Mrs. Bakul Rajni Patel visited, they sat by his bedside, and suddenly, Mr. Hussain pulled out a drawing paper and started sketching a portrait of Sahib.”

“I always treasure that sketch. Next time he came equipped with tons of pristine painting canvas which he stretched out on the drawing room’s floor, made Sahib sit on a chair, and made a portrait. Later, he submitted it to a museum in Hyderabad.”

“Mr. Hussain, a Padmashri, Padmabhushan, and Padmavibhushan, was a globally celebrated Indian artist of the 20th century who attended the Sao Paulo Biennial with Pablo Picasso. His themes ranged from Horses, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, the Ramayana, and the British Raj. His “Voices” painting was auctioned for 2.5 Million Dollars. He began his career painting Cinema Posters for the growing Film Industry in Bombay.”

She added: “Back then, I proudly remember that he had declared that “Pari Chehra” Naseem Banu’s face was the most beautiful that he ever painted. ‘Five Horses’ by Mr. Hussain is his famous painting. The horse, a powerful motif in his art, symbolises the Sun of Power, Knowledge, and Freedom of Spirit in Indian mythology.

“How many people know of his extraordinary idiosyncrasy of being completely BAREFOOT as he stepped out of his swanky Mercedes? I often wondered but never dared to ask him what would he do in cold freezing countries, how would he cope without shoes for heaven’s sake!”

Saira Banu then revealed that Hussain was “inspired” by Madhuri Dixit Nene’s persona.

“We all know he was inspired by Madhuri Dixit’s persona, (and who wouldn’t be smitten by gorgeous and superbly talented Madhuri) his favourite muse. He made many beautiful paintings of her and cast her in the film “GAJA GAMINI”. Mr. Hussain was always followed by his admiring feminine fans, whose eyes riveted on him.”

Romantic relationships are nothing new in Bollywood. Often actors and actresses fall in love on the sets of their films, and their affair becomes the talk of the town. One such supposed relationship that took B-town by surprise was that between Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi.

After the actress’ separation from Kabir Bedi, Parveen was shattered and found solace in the filmmaker. The two began their relationship, sparking rumours in tinsel town. While it may seem like a typical love story, it was far from it.

In an excerpt from a forthcoming biography on Parveen Babi, author Karishma Upadhyay narrates one anecdote from the tangled lives of Mahesh Bhatt, Kabir Bedi and Parveen Babi. As reported by Zoom Entertainment, the author wrote, “The last time he (Mahesh Bhatt) had met her, Parveen was living with Kabir”.

Although Mahesh Bhatt and Kabir Bedi got along well, Mahesh didn’t start feeling anything for Kabir until after he appeared to have broken up with Parveen Babi. Parveen Babi found comfort in the director as things with Kabir went south. Due to a series of circumstances, the two found themselves in a romantic situation.

Their blissful relationship, though, suddenly became depressing. In an interview with a recognised publication, Mahesh Bhatt recently talked about Parveen Babi’s mental health. He described a time when he saw an actress who was acting in a movie costume trembling nervously and clutching a kitchen knife in her hand.

The said incident has also been described by Karishma Upadhyay. “He walked into the house and headed straight for their bedroom. ‘Here she was, curled up on the floor like a beast in one corner of the room,’ he says. ‘She was still in her film costume. She was holding a knife; it was the knife she used at the breakfast table”, he wrote.

According to leading psychiatrists, Parveen was given a paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis. Mahesh Bhatt noted that despite his best efforts, persuading her against her illusions was difficult because they continued worsening. In the book, Karishma Upadhyay recalls Mahesh Bhatt’s comment, “As a child, I had seen a south Indian actor named Ranjan in our neighbourhood, he was said to be a victim of schizophrenia, and that was my only reference.”

Parveen Babi passed away in 2005, and after her death, Mahesh Bhatt wrote for Outlook, “For Me, She Died Twice, once when she had the mental breakdown and now. I owe everything that I am today to my brief association with this magnificent woman. She was a rebel who lived life on her own terms, died on her own terms.”

It was Devika Rani who introduced Dilip Kumar to Indian cinema

When Dilip Kumar aka Yusuf Khan first arrived from Poona (now Pune) in Bombay looking for a job, he met Dr Masani at Churchgate station. The psychologist knew Khan from a lecture he had delivered at Wilson College where the young man had been a student. Dr Masani, who was headed to Malad's sprawling studio, Bombay Talkies, asked him to come along as he (Dr Masani) had an appointment with the studio head, Devika Rani.

It was Yusuf Khan's first visit to a film studio and the meeting with Devika Rani changed his life completely. Devika Rani asked if he knew Urdu; Khan did, as he was born and brought up in Peshawar in the North West Frontier Province. Devika Rani then offered him an opportunity to become an actor with the Studio for a princely monthly salary of Rs 1250/-. She was able to gauge his potential in one meeting. Director Amiya Chakrabarty, who would direct Khan in his first film Jwar Bhata (1944), was present during the meeting. Khan was credited as Dilip Kumar in the film.

It was her suggestion that Yusuf Khan be renamed as Dilip Kumar to suit his romantic image on screen. Besides grooming him for a career in front of the camera, Devika Rani also helped shape Dilip Kumar's acting and performances, encouraging him to watch Hollywood and foreign films and look for inspiration within himself to improve with each film that he did.
