In the early years of American history, the three branches of government were referred to as the First, Second and Third Estate of American democracy. The Fourth Estate encompassed journalism and the media which was tasked with overseeing all three branches of government and informing the public. That mission encompasses many of the ideals that George Mason outlined in the Virginia Declaration of Rights, a document that he authored.

On July 12, Governor Bob McDonnell announced three new appointments and one reappointment to George Mason University's Board of Visitors.

Kelly McNamara Corley, Tom Davis, and Anne C. Gruner will join the 16-member board. John M. Jacquemin has been reappointed.
