Legendary Afrobeats Hall of Famer Dayo “D1” Adeneye reflects on the early vision he and Kenny Ogungbe had for Nigerian music. As radio & TV personalities and founders of the record label, Kennis Music, they were helping to build a blueprint that would later evolve into the modern Afrobeats era.
Sade was the first Nigerian-born artist to win a Grammy in 1986. Now, artists like Burna Boy and Tems have won Grammys, with Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, and Omah Lay among the nominees. And Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti’s legacy was celebrated with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The spotlight on 🇳🇬 may be brighter now, but the foundation was laid by pioneers and took decades to manifest. I think we are only seeing the beginning and that we will soon move on from the only category for African artists being “Best African Music Performance”. I think it’s wild that there is only one Grammy category to honor the massive talent and diversity of genres across a continent as large as Africa.
