Coming off a conference win over Edwards County, the Fairfield Mules looked to secure their ninth straight victory as they hosted Wayne County foe Cisne on Wednesday at Veterans Field at Lakeside Park, and did just that with a 14-2 win over the Cisne Runnin’ Lions.
Cisne struck first in the opening inning when Shane Locey grounded out to bring home a run, giving the Runnin’ Lions an early 1-0 edge.
Fairfield quickly responded in the bottom of the first, erupting for seven runs on two hits to take control at 7-1. The big hit in the inning came from Harv Keyser, who delivered a two-run double to spark the surge.
The Mules continued to add on in the second. Breychan Kovacich drew a bases-loaded walk, and Austin Grieve was hit by a pitch to force in another run, extending the Fairfield lead.
FCHS broke the game open in the fourth inning, plating five more runs. Caleb King drew a walk to score one, Braxton Marshel added an RBI single, Logan Hodges worked another bases-loaded walk, and Keyser was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Grady Rush added to the scoring as well, reaching on a double play that still allowed a run to cross.
On the mound, Caleb King earned the win for Fairfield, tossing two hitless innings with one strikeout and no walks. Austin Grieve started for the Mules, allowing one run on two hits over two innings, while Jake Easton provided relief. Tyler Baker took the loss for Cisne, allowing 11 runs over three innings.
Keyser led Fairfield at the plate with three RBIs from the cleanup spot. Hodges, Marshel, Rush, and Keyser each recorded a hit for the Mules. Fairfield showed excellent plate discipline, drawing 15 walks in the game, with Hayden Felowitz and Grieve leading the way with three each.
On the basepaths, Fairfield stayed aggressive, swiping six bases. Felowitz and Blake Hutchens each recorded multiple steals. The Mules also turned two double plays defensively.
For CHS, Tyler Baker, Hagen Howard, and Quay Johnson each collected a hit, while Locey drove in the lone RBI. Cisne turned one double play defensively.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 9-1 overall and has now won nine straight games. The Mules return to action Thursday on the road at Edwards County.
