Heads up, Jefferson County travelers! Interstate 57 traffic will be diverted overnight from Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, June 3, for structural steel placement on the Illinois 15 overpass. Closures are scheduled nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., weather permitting.

Traffic will be routed around the work zone using the entrance and exit ramps at the Mount Vernon interchange. Expect delays and consider using alternate routes during this closure. More info: http://prez.ly/m3Hd

Salem, Illinois

Methed Up Trespass....Allegedly!

On 5/1/26 at 12:04AM, Salem Police were called to the Mills Crossing Apartments for a report that Kelby Firnhaber was there after having been previously trespassed from the property.

Video footage confirmed that Firnhaber had been on the property.

Firnhaber was located on 5/27/26 by Salem Police and taken into custody for the previous case.

While booking Firnhaber on the charge at the jail, less than 5 grams of methamphetamine was found in his possession along with paraphernalia. Firnhaber was charged with Criminal Trespass to Land and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Salem, Illinois

Hostile Domestic Dispute At Salem Liquor

On 5/27/26 at 11:38 pm, Salem officers were dispatched to Salem Liquor on west Main St for Domestic Disturbance.

The male involved was later identified as Kelby Firnhaber, who had left the scene prior to officers' arrival.

Firnhaber was in an argument with a female who was with him.

The argument escalated and Firnhaber began threatening her and the store attendant.

Firnhaber took the female's cell phone from her and smashed it on the ground.

Firnhaber was located the following day on 5/28/26 at his residence on Markland Street by Salem officers and taken into custody.

Firnhaber was charged with Criminal Damage to Property. Additional charges may follow.

Salem, Illinois

NEIGHBORHOOD FEUD ENDS WITH ARREST

On 5/29/26 at 1:21AM, Salem Officers were called to a domestic disturbance on East Mitchell Street.

Two families were outside upon arrival and people were yelling. Officers spoke to witnesses and determined that a verbal argument started between neighbors.

Eric Smith and Teresa Smith walked over to the neighbor's property near the street easement and were arguing with the neighbor.

Witnesses reported that both Eric and Teresa shoved the female neighbor. Eric and Teresa were arrested for Aggravated Battery in a Public Place.
