Sarah Rutledge Fischer Art Official page for the artist and writer Sarah Rutledge Fischer and her Fairhope,AL studio. And the final and most important figure in the work?

Over and over, I find myself drawn to people--their faces, the bodies that carry them through the world, and the stories they gather along the way. Whether in the smooth shapes and lines of my figure drawings or the curious faces of the figures who emerge in my intuitive paintings and mixed media work, my art is steeped in the stories, emotions, expressions, and character that the human figure bri

ngs to the page and the canvas. You the viewer, who bring with you all of your life's experiences and associations to pull from my work your own connections and understanding. Oh, were you hoping for the more practical details about me? Of course, my friend. I live and work in the beautiful South Alabama town of Fairhope, where I live with my family, my dogs, and an indeterminate number of honeybees. But I am so grateful for the internet, email, and social media which allow me to connect with and learn from people all over the world---people just like you.

It feels so wonderful to be back in the studio. Ever since I stepped in and picked up a brush, this angelic little paper doll has been calling to me. They are almost ready to cut and mount.

Finally got a little time in my new studio tonight, and after two years of being without, it feels so, so good.

No one in my house likes the Mose T chair I picked up a few years ago at an . That’s just fine with me.

I’ve shifted it into my art space, and I’m going to let it support me bodily and spiritually as I dive into my inner critic practice today.

This morning I did a quick card pull on this tarot app and drew The Tower—16th card in the major arcana and an indication of a sudden shift, a major change, an upheaval.

I’ve been getting this message over and over from different sources for about a week. I feel its truth. Everything feels bent to the point of almost breaking, and so many of the people I know and love feel the same way.

I keep trying to stay open to the shift, to be ready to flow with the inevitable upheaval. I don’t feel like it is worth worrying about what the particular shift might be. Change is life, as Octavia Butler taught.

I’m not trying to invite it or hurry it. I can think of far too many sudden changes that would be awful . But I also feel its inevitability—the tension of its potential energy. It is palatable and uncomfortable. I can feel it in my teeth and my bones.

It will shift and soon. And the tower will fall.

I have never been a fan of a last-minute scramble, but what is a kitchen peninsula for if not for art?

These messy backgrounds are for my paper doll workshop tomorrow. It will be a small group, because my lack of studio space had me holding back on promoting it. But sometimes small workshops are the best.
