Truck lighting tips for increased productivity
Light! Who thinks much about light? Let me tell you, it can pay to think about light. 💡 Take this example: In an effort to evenly illuminate the largest area possible in the back of your truck, you might spec the cargo area with either one central lamp or maybe a few lights spaced out down the middle of the ceiling. But this solution can ultimately lead to unforeseen productivity issues for the driver. Watch the video for more.

How telematics can give truck drivers better work-life balance
Addressing a proper work-life balance, recognition and opportunities for training are important in any industry for keeping employees satisfied. In trucking, fleet managers have access to some unique tools to keep tabs on these employee satisfaction levels. Many of these fleet management tools can be customized to collect data insights that adapt to the needs of the fleet. Mobile workflow applications can help identify the time of day and the roads that experience high levels of traffic congestion, allowing drivers to optimize their routes. Learn more by watching the latest On the Road video.

Should you spec pusher axles on over-the-road trucks?
Traditionally, pusher axles are used in vocational applications to distribute the vehicle weight and ensure the other axles are not overloaded. Pusher axles on an on-highway vehicle… well, pusher use has been considered limited because tractor-trailers typically won’t be overloading the other axles. However, in recent years, over-the-road applications like linehaul and regional haul have begun experimenting with 6×2 configurations, adding tag and pusher axles in the quest for greater fuel efficiency. See more in the latest On the Road video.
How renewable energy credits could impact your bottom line, sustainability goals
For fleets investing in renewable energy and zero-emissions vehicles, renewable energy credits (RECs) mean potential dollars signs. Watch the video here for an overview of how RECs work and how they can positively impact a fleet’s profitability.
Why you need to be using truck tire inflation load tables
If you're going about always filling all your tires to the same pressure all the time, you're overlooking something crucial: It's air in the tire that carries the load, not the tire itself.
Getting heavy- and medium-duty trucks to speak the same service language
When a truck service location is faced with both heavy- and medium-duty vehicles all sporting different name plates, there’s often a communication breakdown. Technicians interface with different trucks in different ways, they have to use various methods of pulling the needed service information off said trucks, and jumping back and forth between heavy-duty and medium-duty can be confusion.
For the top service tips when faced with a mix of trucks, the two FE Data Center Jasons connected with yet another Jason–Jason Hedman, JPRO product manager for Noregon. He walks us through connection points, typical challenges that technicians face with heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks and what to do about them. Watch the video above for all of the insight.
Making sense of the 2021 trucking market and what might be ahead
Questions about the trucking market ask themselves at this point: How long can the supply shortage go on? How much demand can consumers muster? Will something have to give? And, of course, what does this mean for fleets moving goods around the country with trucks that are only getting older?
For answers, we turned to Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research, in the latest episode of Unscripted.
When to use pusher axles over tag axles
Both pusher and tag axles are non-powered and can be liftable or stationary axles. The goal for both is to help the truck achieve maximum productivity by increasing payload and distributing weight.

The biggest electric truck surprises from Run on Less—Electric
NACFE's Run on Less—Electric is the most comprehensive electric truck application data set that’s publicly available. Range, charge cycles, deliveries—it’s all there. To find out what the electric tea leaves say, I caught up with NACFE's Mike Roeth to find out what the biggest surprises were during the run and what lessons the event can teach the industry in the early days of electric truck adoption. Watch the video here for all of his insight.
Truck video telematics are getting smarter
Today’s video telematics systems are capable of showing you what you need to see 👁️, and they’re getting smarter, using artificial intelligence to identify potential safe driving infractions and aim to reduce the amount of video footage you have to parse through. Learn more in the latest On the Road video here.
Talking technology accessibility for truck drivers, fleet managers
It’s easy to broad brush technology and make it sound like things just happen instantly. But they don’t. The reality is that platform integrations can take a while (years, in some cases) and multiple log-ins are a daily business reality.
To get a better sense for a driver’s mobile app experience, I connected with David Riordan and Brent Tierney of Lytx at ATA MCE for a demo of their app and a discussion about how to make technology more seamless from a user perspective and more productive from a fleet perspective. Watch the video here for all of the insight.
Why truck tires wear differently across long-haul routes
If you've seen an episode of On the Road before, there's a good chance it was about maintaining your tires. 🚚 Perhaps at one time or another one of these videos has brought about the inspiration to go have a look at your tires yourself. And maybe, particularly in long-haul applications, you've noticed tires are wearing differently across the truck. What's the deal? Watch the video here for more.
Coolant choices are important. Here's why.
It’s easy to judge a diesel engine coolant by its color—easy, and also problematic. The complication comes in as there are two very different types of coolants: conventional fully formulated and extended life (or organic acid technology, or OAT). They protect engines from corrosion very differently and if you mix the two, both will be diluted, and neither will be effective. This could result in catastrophic corrosion which creates a hole from the coolant side of the cylinder liner through to the oil side.
Watch the video here for even more very cool ☃️ engine coolant insight, and words of engine diagnostic wisdom from Jason Hedman, JPro product manager with Noregon.
Early electric truck wins and what's needed going forward
This year may have been the first step in a long decarbonization path, but I wanted to know if the market response to the opening of electric truck orders came as a surprise to Volvo Trucks North America President Peter Voorhoeve, and what he sees coming down the line as the industry barrels into 2022. I had the chance to sit down with Voorhoeve at ATA MCE this past October. Watch the video here for his thoughts on the electric truck market early days and what sustainability efforts are needed in the new year.
Hauling refrigerated goods in the winter: Can it be too cold?
Just a few degrees can make a big difference in terms of quality at the end of a delivery, but can the cold outside affect the cargo inside the reefer unit? ❄️ Related question: what's cooler than being cool?
Get the answers to both in the latest On the Road video.
Truck service tips for when the snow starts to fly
Like it or not, it’s time to start preparing for winter truck service-related issues. ❄️ No-starts, frozen air lines–you name it. 🌨️ In this episode of FE Data Center, the two Jasons take a look at what you need to have on your PM check list to make sure you’re ready for when the temperatures drop.
Making truck drivers happy and meeting decarbonization goals
Greater sustainability through decarbonization doesn’t mean that you have to make drastic equipment choices. Electric trucks are viable for some applications today (and growth into other applications is mostly certain), but not every fleet can be a first adopter. Business basics come into play; but that doesn’t mean that you sit on the sustainability sidelines. There are smaller equipment choices you can make to decarbonize your fleet.
Mack Trucks had one such option on display at ATA’s MCE conference last month. The OEM announced a factory-installed electric Auxiliary Power Unit (eAPU) option for its 70-in. Mack Anthem sleeper models.
Stu Russoli, highway product manager for Mack Trucks, walked us around the Mack Trucks booth and detail the eAPU option in this video.
Clip: The evolving camera technology in today's trucks
The conversation about cameras, particularly driver-facing cameras, is an often tumultuous one. What’s not up for debate is the fact that this camera technology has evolved significantly recently.
Take one announcement from this summer, which was the launch of the AI DashCam from KeepTruckin. The technology provider partnered with Ambarella on the image processing capabilities of the camera to provide a device with ADAS and driver monitoring capabilities.
