The toilet broke, but I didn't.

My mother was an alcoholic. She was abusive.
But my mother was the smartest and the most capable women I have ever known in my life and she made sure I was too.

My mother didnt teach me how to do laundry or clean my home or how to care for my first baby. All of that I learned on my own, but my mother made sure I knew how to take care of my car and lay drywall and patch a hole in the wall and insulate a hot water heater and cook delicious meals and budget every dollar so my children have no idea that we're not as rich as their friends.

I spend most of my time as a parent trying not to be anything like my mother, but on days like today, I try really hard to be just half as good as she was.

I understand why people saw this photo and gushed about what a wonderful man he was. The original comments expressed their admiration for his dedication and his sense of "duty". I don't want to take away from that. I am sure he was a spectacular man and I am sure he is very missed, BUT when I saw this photo I was heartbroken. This is NOT normal. When you vilify teachers, when you ask why they need to be paid more, when you harrass them for not responding to you immediately, when you forget they are humans too... Remember this photo.
