Dakar, So Far........update 6

Time penalties, smoked rear tires, and risk versus reward were the themes of the day on Stage 5's ending marathon section. Luciano Benavides gave Redbull KTM another victory, while Hero's Nacho Cornejo grabbed the runner up spot. Overall race leader Daniel Sanders rounded out the podium in 3rd position.

Previous stage winner Tosha Schareina was hit with a massive 10 minute penalty for failing to enter the starting area in the correct way. This costly mistake now has him in 4th overall and almost 12 minutes behind Sanders in the overall.

The 356km ending to the first marathon stage decimated tires and rims on many competitors machines today. KTM's Edgar Canet rode until the spokes fell out of his rear wheel and he was forced to bow out. Hero's Ross Branch rode over 200km on the rim and finished, be it over an hour behind everyone else.

Up next is the longest stage of the entire rally, 920km down to Riyadh!

Dakar, So Far....Update #5

Monster Energy Honda made their presence known by sweeping the podium during the first part of Stage 4's marathon 500km split. Tosha Schareina made it two wins in a row, with Ricky Brabec six seconds behind in second place, and Skyler Howes taking his first podium of the event in third. Most riders have some tire anxiety, with the jagged rocks and 900km total distance destroying mousses and wheels left and right.

Hero's Tobias Ebster has been forced to bow out after a crash broke his scaphoid bone. It's a tough break for the Austrian, as this is the 3rd time a crash in Dakar has resulted in the same injury.

Talk about a turn around! From having to push his machine 3km in order to finish, to taking the Rally 2 stage win, Neels Theric made history for Kove. This is the first Dakar stage victory for the Chinese manufacturer.

With the pinnacle of moto-camping taking place for the night, who will come out on top tomorrow?

Dakar, So Far...... #4

New stage, new winner. Tosha Schareina gave Monster Energy Honda their first win of Dakar on Stage 3's 713km long course. Tosha took advantage of starting 15th along with some excellent navigation bonuses to secure the victory. Fellow Honda teammate and American Ricky Brabec had his best showing yet, flying past Edgar Canet to take second on the day. Daniel Sanders finishes 3rd, which is still good enough to have the overall lead.

Tomorrow's absolutely grueling two day marathon stage will be a key factor in who comes out on top this year.

Dakar, So Far.... #3

Skillful navigation and time bonuses allow "Chucky" to grab his first stage win of 2026. The 400km stage along with some Camel CLIBBINS allowed Sanders to catch up to Edgar Canet, who finishes second on the day. Ricky Brabec kept up the blistering pace, finishing 11 seconds back in 3rd. Honda seems to be playing the long game this year, so time we'll tell if the move pays off. With time adjustment, Daniel Sanders takes the overall lead by 30 seconds ahead of his Rebull KTM teammate Canet.

It's heartbreak for team Sherco this year, as Lorenzo Santolino suffers a rally ending crash at kilometer 313, leaving only Bradley Cox left for their entire team. Mason Klein had his best finish yet for Hoto, coming in 14th.

Tomorrow's 413km loop out of the ancient city of AlUla will once again be a long, grueling race through the desert.

Dakar, So Far.....Update #2

No change in the finish order today, although it didn't look that way at first. Stage 1's 524km loop was a great opener for what's to come in the next 2 weeks, with fast dunes and sharp rocks.

Hero's Ross Branch looked to have the win all day until a 6 minute speeding penalty dropped him all the way back to 7th. So it's still Canet, Sanders, and Brabec going 1,2,3 respectively. The 20 year old Canet backed up yesterday's Prologue win with an actual Stage win, making history yet again!

Hoto Racing had an up and down day with Martin Michek taking 15th. But the bad luck continues for Mason Klein as mechanical issues on his machine dropped him back to a 40th finish spot.

Early on, it seems to be another epic battle between Redbull KTM and Monster Energy Honda. Can Edgar Canet keep up the win streak in only his second Dakar?

It's Dakar time, So here's the 2026 version of our Dakar, So Far...series!

Edgar Canet makes history as the youngest stage winner in Dakar race history, taking 1st place in the 23km Prologue opening. Reigning champ Daniel "Chucky" Sanders took the runner up spot, giving KTM the top 2 spots on the day. American Ricky Brabec finished 5 seconds behind in 3rd, making sure the absolutely loaded Monster Energy Team Honda club secured a podium finish.

Journeyman Mason Klein aboard the Hoto Chinese team, came in 19th, one minute and two seconds off the leader's pace. Frenchman Neels Theric showed some true grit after a mechanical failure on his Kove forced him the push the machine almost 3km to the finish.

Still no word from Shane Nicely and old girl, updates are expected soon.

The real challenge begins tomorrow with Stage 1!
