Dakar, So Far........update 6
Time penalties, smoked rear tires, and risk versus reward were the themes of the day on Stage 5's ending marathon section. Luciano Benavides gave Redbull KTM another victory, while Hero's Nacho Cornejo grabbed the runner up spot. Overall race leader Daniel Sanders rounded out the podium in 3rd position.
Previous stage winner Tosha Schareina was hit with a massive 10 minute penalty for failing to enter the starting area in the correct way. This costly mistake now has him in 4th overall and almost 12 minutes behind Sanders in the overall.
The 356km ending to the first marathon stage decimated tires and rims on many competitors machines today. KTM's Edgar Canet rode until the spokes fell out of his rear wheel and he was forced to bow out. Hero's Ross Branch rode over 200km on the rim and finished, be it over an hour behind everyone else.
Up next is the longest stage of the entire rally, 920km down to Riyadh!
