We love this! Who knew a high school yearbook could be part of such an amazing journey? Pope Leo XIV was once the editor-in-chief of the yearbook at St. Augustine Seminary in Holland, MI, and their book earned second place in the CSPA's 39th annual critique. This accomplished student from the class of '73 was also on the honor roll and held numerous leadership positions. Involvement in scholastic journalism can help form the foundation to open unexpected doors!

Bob Schick of Walpole, Massachusetts went to high school with Robert Prevost, who is now Pope Leo XIV.

After a six-month long season full of new routines, football games and school spirit, the cheerleading season concluded on March 15. With a short postseason, the team has already begun preparing for next year with captain elections, resulting in juniors Mary Noblitt, Liza Martinez and Mairin Putnam being the new cheer captians. Tryouts for the new year took place on March 25 and 26. Putnam, a member of the cheer team since freshman year, expressed that tryouts are about both skill and character.

“What makes a good cheerleader is not solely the amount of skill that you have; it is also the amount of effort,” Putnam said. “Talent is one thing, but a lot of it comes down to stage presence and potential. Your attitude and how you present yourself as a person matters more than people think.”

A day dedicated to obstacle courses, dancing and strategy games as eight herds compete for in the Ursuline Cup Finals. On April 11, the school will host its annual Ursuline Cup Day to determine the new champion. With 115 points available, any herd can come out on top. The day consists of many games, including Just Dance, castleball, marshmallow catch, a 4×1 and obstacle relay race, a frozen t-shirt race, trivia, tug of war and other competitions. To make it more inclusive, the herd executives planned a broad range of competitions to allow people to shine in areas outside of athletics.

“We realized getting more people involved meant having to have other focuses such as academic events,” Tylicki executive Kirston Verhulst said. “Finding different ways for people to be involved helps get people out of being in little cliques and makes everyone ultimately more tight knit over the spirited day. The day feels like one big family getting together to celebrate, and I think that’s what’s so special.”

Breaking new ground in faith– On Tuesday, March 25, the new Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto began construction. The entire student body assembled outside to experience the Grotto groundbreaking with Archbishop Joseph Nauman presiding. The Grotto will be similar in style to the one in Lourdes, France where the Blessed Virgin visited Saint Bernadette. According to President Phil Baniewicz, the idea first came about as a way to build up the faith life on campus and as a visible sign of a proud, Catholic school.

“If people are drawn closer to the Lord through the Blessed Mother, that’s a great thing for us,” Baniewicz said. “I’m hoping that students will know this is going to be a place they will always be welcome to go and pray.”

STAGROBOTICS - Team 1997 will travel to Sedalia, MO for the FRC Central Missouri Regional competition on Thursday, March 6. For the past six weeks, the team designed and built their robot. Field elements were also created to simulate the competition. The regional competition spans three days divided by practice, qualification and finals. Each team is ranked at the end of the second day, and the top eight teams choose their alliances (a group of three teams) for the finals in a double-elimination bracket.

According to senior design team leader Alexander Nies, competition season helps to strengthen team dynamics and cultivate relationships.

“Throughout the season, they really become your family and not just your friends,” Nies said.

Taking home field advantage– Juniors took the ACT on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Starting in 2019, the Kansas Legislature started to cover a single ACT test for every junior at their school. According to ACT.org, the ACT contains multiple-choice tests in four areas: English, mathematics, reading and science. Guidance counselor Amy Carman expressed how taking the ACT at school prior helps students on the day of the test as it helps many be more familiar with the content.
“I think it’s good to take it for the first time at your school because you’re in your flex time and you’re with students and teachers that you know,” Carman said. “It’s one less added pressure of having to take the test.”

Once upon a stage— the theater department performs the play “Secret in the Wings,” a story following an ogre telling a young girl the lesser-known brothers Grimm stories. The cast has been working on perfecting its performance for the past two months. There are three shows: Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

“The play really has it all; there’s some dancing, singing and wacky characters that just give a very strong mood and vibe to the show,” cast member junior Luke Allen said.

Looking across the dimly lit chapel, senior Aryanna Rodriguez steps up to the podium to share her story of witnessing the Catholic faith in front of students and faculty during a Summit Night.
Beginning this year, Summit Nights are held monthly for the community and is a space for adoration, prayer and fellowship. Students have the opportunities to gain faith-based leadership experience.
“It gives you the chance to open up a conversation with God through music and prayers and do it together with other people so you don’t feel alone at any point,” Rodriguez said. “I was nervous because parts of my talk carry a lot of weight in who I am and being vulnerable is definitely not an easy thing to do, but Ms. Moylan was very supportive.”

Pinning Down Success– Juniors Brady Beaver, Luke Olson and Mary Benes, senior DeLano Sheffield and freshmen Brooklyn Davis and Jahlil Marshall competed and placed in the Shawnee Mission North High School wrestling invitational on Feb. 1.

This season, the team has gained multiple new freshmen and had placers at every competition. According to Olson, the coaches have done an excellent job of building leaders on the team that set good examples and encourage the rest of the team to do the right thing.

“My favorite part about being on the wrestling team is seeing other people’s success,” Olson said. “People who have just started wrestling have come a long way and better themselves in a lot of ways, more than just wrestling.”

Seniors Teresa Sollars and Caitlin Coble competed in the Kansas Thespian Festival from Jan. 9 – 11, both receiving ‘superior scores’. Based on a scale of “Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair” from the judges. By achieving the superior rating, Sollars and Coble qualify to compete at the International Thespian Festival.

According to Coble, they compete the “thespys”, (a performance and technical presentation) on Thursday, and the following Friday students can choose between countless masterclasses. Additionally, there is an opportunity for seniors to attend college auditions for admission and scholarships.

“The masterclasses are often taught by theater professionals and offer great learning experiences,” Sollars said. “Different schools are allowed to submit their school musicals or plays for consideration to perform at the festival, and if a production is selected, they perform their whole show in front of the festival.”
