The Quequechan River has been at the heart of Fall River, Massachusetts, for centuries. Its name comes from a Wampanoag word meaning “falling river” or “leaping waters,” a reference to the series of waterfalls that once flowed through the city.

Those powerful falls helped transform Fall River into one of New England’s largest textile manufacturing centers during the 1800s, providing the waterpower that drove dozens of mills. Today, much of the river flows underground through the city, but it remains an important part of Fall River’s history and identity.

Next time you’re in Fall River, remember that beneath the streets is a river that helped build an entire city. 🌊🏭
