Today let’s profile Liverpool, England!
Liverpool is best known for the Beatles, who changed the course of music and popular culture. The city was once a busy shipping and manufacturing center on England’s northwest shore. It was badly damaged by air raids during WWII. After the war, unemployment was high. For young people, the future looked gloomy. Music provided an escape from this hardscrabble reality. It happened in clubs like The Casbah Coffee Club and the legendary Cavern. Local musicians were busy crafting the “Merseybeat sound” (after the Mersey River, which flows through Liverpool). At the height of this musical renaissance there were more than 300 active bands in the city.
