On June 4, 2014, the dismembered remains of an unidentified black man were discovered in the parking lot of Town Neck Beach in Sandwich. Over 12 years later, the Massachusetts State Police are still searching for his name and family—and they want your help.

Just after 8 PM, on the night of Wednesday, June 4 2014, the man’s torso was discovered behind a jersey barrier and some dunes in the Town Neck parking lot. It was placed in a duffel bag and wrapped in a plastic tarp, secured with duct tape, atop a blue dolly cart. The victim’s head, legs and arms have never been located.

Given the paucity of evidence, details about John Doe have been difficult to come by—investigators have determined that the man was between 5’ 8” and 6’ tall, weighed between 220 and 230 pounds, and was between 20 and 40 years old.

“Today, investigators continue to pursue every available lead,” reads a press release from the State Police Unresolved Case Unit. “We are actively utilizing forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) in an effort to identify this victim and return his name to him.”

This relatively new technology seems to have borne fruit for detectives. According to the press release, new research “suggests the victim may have had family connections” to Darlington County, South Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; Brooklyn, New York; and Rhode Island.

Earlier this winter, Kleyton Moraes and Gabriel B. da Silva went for a winter storm spin near Mashpee-Wakeby Pond. The colleagues and close friends explored the snow-covered water, walking across it until they felt a small crack.

“We said, ‘Oh my God, the ice is cracking; we have to run,’” Moraes remembered with a laugh. “We were so afraid that we forgot about our truck. We had to go back for it.”

Da Silva, 22, drowned in Mashpee-Wakeby Pond and died at Falmouth Hospital on Monday. Da Silva had a close childhood friend who lived on Cape Cod, and moved to West Yarmouth to support his family back home in Brazil.

Moraes first met da Silva five years ago when he started working for KM Trees & Solutions, Moraes’ Sandwich-based arborist business. Although their relationship started in the professional world, it quickly blossomed into a close friendship and brotherhood, with Moraes considering da Silva his “younger brother.” Laryssa Moraes, Kleyton Moraes’ wife, said her husband was da Silva’s emergency contact and the one he loved most on the Cape, a reciprocated sentiment that “feels like a hug” during this time.

The Moraeses said da Silva was raised by his grandmother and aunt in Brazil in “a hard situation,” as his mother experienced mental health challenges and his entire family experienced financial hardship. Laryssa Moraes said da Silva viewed his aunt as his mother, and that his first dream was to buy her a home in Brazil.

Da Silva also dreamed of owning his own company. At the end of this year, Kleyton Moraes was going to bring da Silva on as a partner of his tree service company, changing its name to KGM Trees & Solutions to include da Silva’s initial.

“We did not have enough time,” Kleyton Moraes said.

Laryssa Moraes said the pair “acted like little kids” when together, and what da Silva loved most about the Cape was spending time with her husband outside of work. Da Silva loved the beach, the lake and barbecue, especially from the Brazilian Grill in Hyannis.

This week, the final touches of design and décor will be added, light fixtures and speakers installed, furniture moved in and the menu finalized before owner Alex Khan welcomes the first customers to his new restaurant, The Old Casino, at 286 Grand Avenue in Falmouth Heights.

Khan’s reimagining of the historic restaurant and bar aims to revive a sense of nostalgia for the Cape Cod summer experience—good company, drinks and meals enjoyed with an oceanfront view.

The building sits on 0.86 acres overlooking Vineyard Sound and includes a private beach and three stories of waterfront residential condominiums.

Khan, who also owns other Falmouth Heights businesses—Shipwrecked, The Heights Hotel and the commercial unit housing The Old Casino—grew up spending his summers in Falmouth.

Over the years, he said, he has watched Falmouth Heights evolve. Compared with the 1990s, for example, there are fewer rooms available for college students looking to spend the summer in town as lifeguards, as Khan once did.

To help shape the future of the space, Khan sought public input. More than 750 people completed a survey about what the restaurant should serve, the type of entertainment it should offer and what the venue should prioritize.

Although a regular schedule has not been set beyond the soft opening this weekend, Khan plans to operate throughout the summer and remain open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the off-season. As he has done with Shipwrecked, he plans to make improvements each winter to update and improve the restaurant.

UPDATES: Two motor vehicle crashes snarled traffic in Bourne this morning, causing a difficult morning commute.

The first crash occurred on Sandwich Road near Market Basket at 7:33 AM. Bourne police reported that the crash involved a Jeep driven by a 35-year-old man from North Carolina and a pickup truck driven by a 43-year-old man from Pocasset.

Bourne Police wrote in a Facebook post that the two vehicles had collided, head on, in the west-bound travel lane. Drivers from both vehicles were transported to area hospitals, police said. One driver was transported by medical helicopter that landed behind Gallo Ice Arena on Sandwich Road, police said.

The crash forced the closure of Sandwich Road from the Mid-Cape Connector in South Sagamore to the South Rotary at the Bourne Bridge, and led to significant traffic delays in the area. Police said that due to the severity of the injuries, the cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Crash Reconstruction Team.

Troopers from the State Police Bourne Barracks are still responding to a crash involving a tractor-trailer in the area of Exit 1A that occurred at approximately 8:30 AM. The dispatch call stated that the tractor-trailer went over an embankment and that two ambulances were requested to the scene.

Currently, one lane is open to traffic.

The Falmouth Housing Corporation received unanimous support from the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) on June 11 for a funding request that would go toward the acquisition of the former Royal Falmouth Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for affordable senior housing.

The committee voted to recommend approval of a $2.6 million Falmouth Affordable Housing Fund (FAHF) request. The Housing Corporation is expected to put in another $1.9 million application to the FAHF to help with the construction of the project.

Housing Corporation Executive Director Linda Clark told the committee that the project would include 51 affordable rental units for residents aged 62 and older, noting the apartments would be restricted to households earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income.

The town recently rescinded $3.4 million from affordable housing developer Michael B. Galasso, who had been looking to buy 545 Main Street and renovate the building into workforce housing. By revoking the funds, the money becomes available for future housing projects.

With Galasso unable to meet the conditions of the agreement before his agreement expired, the seller entered into an agreement with the Housing Corporation.

At last week's CPC meeting, Clark clarified that the organization first explored the property about six years ago “with the same intent—to put up some senior housing." The Housing Corporation chose not to pursue the site after another property became available. However, Clark said, the organization remained interested in the site and informed the owner that it would like to be notified if the property ever went back on the market.

While the Housing Corporation has received unanimous support, the matter still needs to be considered by the Select Board.

As a child, Amanda C. Spearin, 39, treated her mother’s Pilates reformer like a jungle gym. Decades later, that same piece of equipment helped shape her career and inspired her to open her very own studio.

In April, the North Falmouth resident opened Cape Cod Pilates, located at 4 Barlow’s Landing Road in Pocasset, bringing full-apparatus Pilates classes and private sessions to Upper Cape residents seeking strength, mobility and recovery.

In adulthood, after years of running marathons and competing athletically, Spearin said that recurring injuries led her to seek an exercise that would build strength without causing her further strain.

Juggling athletics and her studies, Spearin studied business at Emmanuel College in Boston and later entered nursing. The studio and instructing are now her full-time job, and she said she could not be happier. “It’s the best feeling in the world, knowing you can ease somebody’s pain.”

Spearin said that there are misconceptions, like that Pilates is just “for dancers.”

“No, it’s not; It’s actually for anybody,” she said. “I have 90-year-old women who come and take this class. I have 20-year-old women who take this class. It doesn’t matter.”
