MONROVIA, LIBERIA: The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) President, Julius Kanubah, has openly questioned the media legacy the Unity Party led government under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai intends to leave behind.
Speaking Saturday at the 2nd Annual Presidential Media Dinner 2026, Kanubah placed the future of Liberiaโs media sector at the center of the discussion, challenging the administration to demonstrate whether its tenure will produce lasting gains for the countryโs journalists and media institutions.
Kanubah specifically raised questions about press freedom, journalistsโ welfare, media development, and the broader working environment for media practitioners.
He questioned whether, at the end of the Boakai administration, Liberiaโs media community would be able to point to significant and lasting reforms that strengthened journalistsโ rights, improved their welfare, and created a more sustainable media environment.
The PUL Presidentโs intervention comes amid continuing conversations about the relationship between government and the media, as well as the need for stronger institutional support for journalists and media organizations.
Kanubah suggested that the administrationโs media legacy should ultimately be assessed by what it does to protect the freedom of the press and improve the conditions under which journalists operate.
The central question, according to the PUL President, is whether the Boakai administration will be remembered as a government that meaningfully advanced, protected, and strengthened Liberiaโs media, or simply as another administration whose promises to the press fell short of producing lasting institutional change.
His remarks have consequently placed the issue of the governmentโs media legacy firmly on the national conversation, with the remaining years of the administration providing an opportunity to translate commitments to press freedom and journalistsโ welfare into measurable action.
