Fort Lewis College’s Fundamental Needs Oasis Project and the Rural Clean Energy Partnership are expanding off-grid solar power and clean water access for Navajo Nation families – with high school and college students leading the installations.

A $150,000 grant from the Honnold Foundation will support solar installations, solar-powered water systems and renewable energy training for high school and Fort Lewis College students, according to a college news release.

Warm and dry conditions have dominated much of the West, including Southwest Colorado, heading into winter.

But precipitation is expected to return with a storm arriving on Christmas Eve. Just how much moisture will be carried into the region remains uncertain, said Braeden Winters, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

Regardless, snow is in the forecast.

The San Juan Mountains have the best chance for widespread snowfall, while warm lower elevations could see rain instead.

Rebuilding of 10.719 miles of federal highway between Hogback and Shiprock is now underway and will cost approximately $248,987.03. The project will eliminate the present “dead man’s curve” where the present highway makes a sharp and narrow turn around the south point of the Hogback, with the river cutting in below the road.
