After WWII, radio was booming—and so was WTIC!
1947: Bob Steele calls play-by-play of a world featherweight boxing championship (Willie Pep vs. Jock Leslie)
1949: WTIC wins Variety magazine’s award for youth programming, thanks to shows like Mind Your Manners

WTIC Fact of the Week: During World War II, WTIC rose to the moment—not only delivering news but also producing programs that boosted morale and served the nation.
Local series like Connecticut Yankees at Camp Wheeler and Uncle Jim’s Victory Garden gave advice on rationing and victory gardens.
WTIC even created a national weekly show for NBC, The United States Coast Guard on Parade, hosted by WTIC’s Bob Tyrol—who was so inspired, he enlisted and became the youngest Coast Guard officer in WWII. On July 4, 1943, WTIC began airing the famous “V for Victory” time signal, using the Morse code “V”, the opening notes of Beethoven’s 5th.
WTIC also fueled the War Bond effort by hosting the quiz show Information Please at Hartford’s Bushnell Theater—helping kick off $203 million in Connecticut War Bonds.
By war’s end, WTIC had proven radio’s power to unite, inform, and inspire during global conflict.
