A heartbreaking update out of northern Arizona:

Authorities say 26-year-old Kiah Jae Begaye, 26-year-old Giovanni Uballe Huerta and their two young children, ages 4 and 2, were killed Monday in a head-on crash on SR-260 near Heber-Overgaard.

Arizona DPS says the pickup driver, 21-year-old Jesse David Lovato of Los Lunas, New Mexico, was arrested on four counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault.

A Farmington woman was arrested after police alleged she drove while impaired with a child in the passenger seat — and the new charges are now tied to a separate probation matter.

According to court records, officers stopped Cheridan V. Nakai, 37, after a Walgreens employee reported a driver who appeared impaired and was having trouble writing legibly. Police allege Nakai was unsteady on her feet and showed multiple clues during field sobriety testing.

Nakai reported taking prescription medications about an hour before officers contacted her, according to the probable cause statement. She consented to a blood draw, but the records reviewed by San Juan Pulse did not include the results or identify the medications.

Separate Corrections Department records show Nakai was under probation supervision stemming from an earlier case in which the court withheld adjudication of guilt and granted a conditional discharge. A Sept. 6 arrest order alleges the new DWI and child-abuse charges violated her probation conditions.

The new charges and alleged probation violation have not been proven in court.

A 5:40 a.m. disturbance at a Kirtland RV park ended with a Shiprock man facing attempted breaking-and-entering and battery charges.

Court records allege Leondre J. Begay, 26, tried to enter a cabin using the door keypad before a confrontation with several people outside. Deputies later found him being restrained on a gravel roadway.

Investigators also documented what happened after he was placed in custody.

A Farmington driver was allegedly clocked at 69 mph in a 35 mph zone shortly after collisions involving two other vehicles, according to court records.

New Mexico State Police allege Isaac Stallings, 23, showed signs of impairment during the Sept. 7 stop. Breath-test records later showed results of 0.26 and 0.25.

Stallings now faces aggravated DWI and seven additional traffic-related charges.

If you’ve never made the trip to Santa Fe for Zozobra, it’s honestly worth doing at least once.

We took the Rail Runner up last night, which made the whole trip easier and was part of the experience itself. My son had never been on a train before, so he was pretty excited about that.

Once we got to Fort Marcy Park, there was plenty going on before the actual burning — crowds, fireworks, the drone show, food vendors and then thousands of people yelling “BURN HIM!” when Zozobra finally went up.

Also, shoutout to The Cornivore for the movie butter popcorn and JP’z Drive Thru Fair Food for the funnel cake. Both were really good.

The fireworks were a little loud for my son at times and he’d cover his ears and duck when the big ones went off 😂, but overall he had a great time.

Definitely one of those New Mexico events I’d recommend checking out if you haven’t been.

BREAKING: Shiyazh Pete did not make the Dallas Cowboys’ initial practice squad, according to reporting from the El Paso Times.

Pete, the Navajo offensive lineman who became the first citizen of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team, was waived by Dallas as the Cowboys finalized their 53-man roster.

Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times reported Monday that Dallas signed its initial group of practice-squad players and Pete was not among them.

ICT also reported Monday that Pete cleared waivers, making him eligible to sign with any NFL team, but had not yet found a new home as of publication. (ICT)

That means Pete’s time with the Cowboys appears to be over for now — but his NFL journey may not be.

The 6-foot-8, 322-pound offensive lineman remains a free agent and can still sign with another team’s practice squad or potentially an active roster.

Pete became one of the Cowboys’ biggest preseason stories after receiving a warm reception from Indigenous fans during Dallas’ game in Arizona and later going viral for an emotional postgame locker-room speech.

His agent, Brett Tessler, previously said Pete had a memorable preseason and should get another opportunity to continue developing somewhere this season.

For now, the question shifts from whether Pete will remain with Dallas to which NFL team, if any, gives him his next opportunity.

Farmington gas is about 32¢ higher than Albuquerque right now. ⛽
We asked Republican gubernatorial candidate Gregg Hull why — and what he would do about it.

According to AAA gas-price data from Aug. 29, Farmington drivers are paying roughly 32 cents more per gallon than drivers in Albuquerque.

That difference adds up quickly for families commuting, working and traveling across northwest New Mexico.

Hull said the price difference deserves scrutiny and raised the possibility that officials should look at whether something improper — including potential price gouging — could be contributing to higher prices.

For comparison, AAA currently lists New Mexico’s statewide average for regular gas at about $4.01 per gallon.

Orson Bahe was killed in a hit-and-run on U.S. 64 — and court records say a semi-truck linked to the crash was captured on camera just minutes before he was struck.

Deputies recovered bumper pieces from the scene with what appeared to be blood spatter, while camera and GPS data allegedly helped investigators trace the truck to Luis Fernando-Panduro-Ruelas.

The affidavit states the truck assigned to him was later found in Gallup with front-end damage and identifying numbers peeled from the hood, while investigators were told he left work after reporting a family issue.

Panduro-Ruelas is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident involving death and failure to immediately report the crash.

All charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

“We will investigate it, absolutely.”

That was Republican gubernatorial nominee Gregg Hull’s direct response when asked about the ZenniHome housing controversy on the Navajo Nation.

Hull said it was the first time he had heard about the issue, calling it a brand-new concern for him. He asked that detailed information be sent to him by email so he could look into it further.

The issue has already drawn scrutiny on the Navajo Nation. Approximately $24 million was paid to Indigenous Design Studio + Architecture, which subcontracted ZenniHome to build homes for Navajo families. Navajo Nation officials say completed homes were not delivered, and the Navajo Nation Department of Justice is pursuing remedies.

For residents across the Navajo Nation and northwest New Mexico, these direct exchanges matter. Statewide candidates need to hear directly about the specific issues affecting rural and tribal communities — not just the state’s largest population centers.

We’ll follow up to see whether Hull follows through and looks into the issue.
