A Champion for Every Child’s Presence — Celebrating Mrs. Vertonya Cameron!
Big news from the Mississippi Department of Education! The 2024–2025 Chronic Absenteeism Report is out, and Jefferson County School District now has the 2nd lowest chronic absenteeism rate in the state—an impressive 13.8%, down from 14.51% last year!
This milestone is the result of many hands and hearts working together—but today, we pause to shine a spotlight on someone whose unwavering commitment, compassion, and consistency helped make this moment possible: Mrs. Vertonya Cameron, our School Attendance Officer & Dropout Prevention Coordinator.
From early morning calls to home visits, check-ins with families, and holding students accountable with grace and love, Mrs. Cameron has been a vital force in ensuring our children show up, stay engaged, and have the chance to succeed.
“Mrs. Cameron is the kind of champion every school district prays for—steadfast, caring, and deeply committed to helping every child walk through the schoolhouse doors.” — Superintendent Dr. Adrian Hammitte
We are beyond grateful for her service, and we know this is just the beginning. Because when students attend school consistently, everything changes. The data proves it. The progress shows it. And the lives touched reflect it.
Thank you, Mrs. Cameron, for being a pillar of hope, accountability, and action.
