Are you heating your PMA optimally without damaging the binder?

This guide by industry veterans Ron Corun and Bob Kluttz outlines the essential best practices for handling polymer‑modified asphalt (PMA) at the plant.

We talk critical steps—emptying tank heels, using dedicated storage tanks, proper circulation in horizontal tanks, and avoiding direct-fire heat to protect binder integrity. We also spotlight temperature control, slow re‑heating after long storage, shear‑thinning viscosity behavior during production, and practical setup for pumps and slat conveyors. We also underscore the importance of clean truck beds, careful compaction temperatures, and the shortened working window for highly modified (HiMod) binders.

What’s your top tip for handling PMA safely and effectively? Share it in the comments—and read the full article for a deep dive into best practices: https://theasphaltpro.com/articles/handling-pma-at-the-plant/ |

Quality control means hitting all the specs, but what about jobs that don’t follow a spec book? What about indications of quality that aren’t IN any spec book?

In Bill Stanley’s September article, he shares 10 field-tested habits to deliver blue-collar quality you can see, not just measure.

That starts with showing up prepared, using the right tool for the job, and not ‘cowboying the equipment’. Crews also walk the site before paving, plan traffic like they plan equipment, and revisit past work to improve future results.

Apex Paving, a Delta Companies Inc company, placed over 5,000 tons of 34 percent RAP mix in just three days—and won a top national award for it.

The recent overlay of Route UU in Missouri stood out for both speed and quality, earning a Larry H. Lemon Award.

The project’s success stemmed from efficient planning, including light coordination with local farmers and proactive communication around new ADA sidewalks. Leveraging a plant just 18 miles away cut haul times and helped ensure mix quality. Electronic ticketing via Fleetwatcher added an extra layer of QC. Careful crew management and attention to the final visual finish made this project a model of rural overlay ex*****on.

What’s the fastest high-RAP overlay your team has completed? Drop your best turnaround time in the comments and let us know what made it work.

Could this bucket change how you handle reclaimed asphalt?

ALLU’s new asphalt bucket transforms asphalt recycling by combining crushing and screening into a single step. Designed for 25- to 45-ton excavators and 15- to 30-ton wheel loaders, it eliminates the need for extra crushers while increasing productivity.

With throughput rates up to 250 TPH and a hybrid blade setup, this tool produces over 95% of material below target size. Contractors benefit from lower operating costs and reduced complexity on the job site.

Could your job site benefit from one-step RAP recycling? Let us know what tools you’re using and read the article here: https://theasphaltpro.com/articles/allu-asphalt-bucket/ |

Need a distributor that adjusts spray width on the fly?

The new Bomag BD 2000 asphalt distributor is designed for one-person operation, precise tack application, and enhanced control on today’s paving jobs.

Its 2,000-gallon insulated tank supports large-scale work, while the hydraulically extending spray bar enables variable widths from 7.5 to 15.7 feet with flat nozzles spaced every 4 inches. Computer-controlled distribution ensures uniformity, and the automatic burner system keeps heating consistent without extra monitoring.

How do you manage tack truck accuracy on large jobs? Tell us in the comments and read the article to see how the BD 2000 aims to simplify that task: https://theasphaltpro.com/bomag-bd-2000-asphalt-distributor/ |
