RJ Daigle & Sons cut $5,000 a day in trucking costs on one project by eliminating overtrucking—here’s how.

RJ Daigle and Sons, a third-generation paving company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is saving time and money by using AlignOps' FleetWatcher telematics across its trucking operations. From accurately paying third-party trucks to eliminating overtrucking on long-haul jobs, the system has helped cut hours of paperwork and thousands in daily costs.

Logistics Manager Ryan Marciante now runs shift reviews, dispatch, and job forecasting faster and with better accuracy. Crews at Daigle’s two asphalt plants use the system to time production more efficiently as well.

Takeaways for asphalt pros:
Virtual shift tickets reduce payroll delays
Telematics help trim unnecessary trucks from the job
One-click dispatch replaces manual texts and cuts confusion

To better connect with women working long field hours, the SC branch of Women of Asphalt launched “Building Community with Biscuits,” a boots-on-the-ground program that brings WofA steering committee members directly to job sites, labs, and offices—meeting workers where they are, and starting conversations over breakfast.

So far, they’ve visited 12 companies and reached over 100 women. The program has not only raised awareness, but sparked mentorship interest, career pride, and dialogue among men and women alike. Other states are now adapting the concept.

What kind of outreach has worked in your company? Share your ideas 👇

Brandon Lima will step into the role of Executive Director at the Hawaii Asphalt Paving Industry (HAPI) starting August 1, 2025. With a background spanning both public service and private industry, Lima brings technical depth and field insight to this leadership position.

He currently works with the Hawaii DOT overseeing bituminous lab operations, and he spent over a decade in quality control at Grace Pacific. These roles give him a rare dual perspective on agency standards and contractor operations.

HAPI anticipates a smooth transition, with current Executive Director Jon Young staying on part-time through the end of the year.

What qualities do you think matter most in an industry leader? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know. Read the full article to learn more about Brandon Lima’s background and plans for HAPI.

Contractors in ABC’s STEP program saw TRIR drop 85%. Want to know which 5 safety practices made it happen?

ABC’s 2025 Health and Safety Performance Report reveals STEP® participants achieved incident rates 658% better than national averages and cut TRIR by 85%, based on over a billion work hours tracked.

Five foundational practices drove these results: comprehensive new-hire orientation, substance–abuse prevention, frequent toolbox talks, engaged top management, and monitoring leading indicators.

Each practice significantly lowered both TRIR and DART rates—some by more than 75%.

Which of these five safety steps are you already using—and which one will you add next? Comment below 👇 Read the full results and recommendations now.

Long before agencies debated resilience standards, asphalt producers were designing infrastructure to handle real-world threats—quakes, hurricanes, and everything in between.

In this issue, Sandy Lender’s editor’s letter recalls a visit to Stansteel’s Louisville facility preparing iron for a California site, engineered to handle seismic force. The timing feels relevant again as hurricane season gains steam—and as new legislation rolls back certain federal reporting and funding programs.

But here’s the thing: asphalt professionals haven’t waited on permission to do the right thing. We’ve built smart, tough infrastructure for decades. The industry doesn’t just talk sustainability; it plans for uptime.

What resilience feature would you never skip when designing or upgrading a plant? Share your thoughts in the comments.

📸: All Roads seismically engineered their silos, which required 28 closed-end 610mm steel piles to be driven prior to the rebar and concrete placement. Additionally, they constructed a seismically engineered, water-tight tank farm to prevent contamination if an earthquake were to occur and an AC tank were to collapse.

Ever heard a milling machine operator say ‘the asphalt will cover it’? ✋Happens all the time. But the truth is, the milling pattern matters. It really matters!

A profit-minded milling crew understands that milling speed consistency is just as critical as clean pattern goals. The mill operator must set and maintain a steady speed and depth per project specs.

But success doesn’t stop there—truck drivers need to know the plan too. Coordinating truck cycles with mill speed avoids start/stop milling, which leads to uneven texture, varying depths, and higher costs downstream.

While some may cut corners—assuming the paving layer will fix speed-related mistakes—this approach simply transfers problems and costs to paving and compaction crews.

A steady milling pace creates a uniform pattern, supports smoother mat placement, and reduces operating expenses. Open, day‑of communication between operator, project foreman, and trucking foreman is essential for syncing load cycles with milling speed and volume.

How do you keep milling speed on target? Leave a comment below, then read the full article for more milling tips: https://theasphaltpro.com/milling-speed-consistency/

With California’s PAGA update, one missing meal period record can cost you—here’s how to avoid that.

As of July 1, 2024, California’s updated PAGA rules place significant compliance pressure on employers to document meal/rest breaks and overtime accurately—retaining records for at least four years. Employers must provide timely meal and rest breaks under state law, with premium overtime pay kicking in for over 8, 10, or 12 hours worked. To stay compliant, companies should:
▪️ Implement clear timekeeping policies covering clock‑in/out, breaks, and overtime.
▪️ Use precise time-tracking systems—including meal break timing.
▪️ Conduct regular audits of time-data.
▪️ Maintain transparent channels for reporting payroll/time errors.

HCSS offers a construction-focused timekeeping platform that logs hours, breaks, cost codes, and supports auditing and record retention. Andrew Fowler from HCSS highlights how these tools lift administrative burden, letting supervisors focus on jobsite efficiency instead of liability.

How are you managing timekeeping and meal-break tracking under California’s new PAGA rules? Comment below 👇

Producing 425 TPH and using 50 % RAP? The EX 8845’s 88″ × 45′ drum handles both in a counterflow design.

ADM - Asphalt Drum Mixers Inc.'s EX 8845 asphalt plant packs 425 TPH capacity into an 88‑inch × 45‑foot counterflow drum, designed to accept up to 50 % RAP. Counterflow technology separates drying and mixing zones, capturing residual heat and emissions and reusing them in combustion—reducing blue smoke and HC output.

This design improves fuel efficiency and helps producers meet tight environmental limits, all while maintaining high throughput. Plants running variable mix designs with high recycled content can now get both high production and compliance from a single, efficient system.

What’s your current max throughput with 50 % RAP? Could counterflow cut smoke and fuel use on your next job?
