Consequences of crawlspace neglect
Moisture and mold:
✅Lack of proper ventilation and waterproofing can trap moisture, leading to mold and mildew growth. This can damage building materials and release spores that worsen indoor air quality and trigger respiratory problems.
✅Structural damage: Moisture can cause wood rot in floor joists and support beams, weakening the home's foundation over time. This can result in sagging floors, cracks in walls, and other expensive structural problems.
✅Pest infestations: A damp, neglected crawlspace is an ideal breeding ground for pests like termites, carpenter ants, rodents, and insects, which can cause further damage to insulation and structural components.
✅Poor air quality: A significant portion of your home's air can come from the crawlspace, especially when the AC is running.
✅Contaminants like mold spores and odors can rise into the living areas, affecting the health of occupants and causing issues like allergies and asthma.
✅Increased energy bills: Poor insulation and air leaks allow conditioned air to escape in the winter and hot air to enter in the summer. This forces your HVAC system to work harder, leading to higher energy consumption and costs.
✅Reduced home value: Visible signs of neglect, such as moisture damage or pest problems, can be red flags for potential buyers and decrease the market value of your home.
