Health scores and genetic DNA testing on both parents? This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the

eyelid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, or pigment developing on the cornea which can interfere with vision. Ectropion: is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the lower eyelid 'rolls' outward or is everted. This causes the lower eyelids to appear droopy. Ectropion exposes the delicate conjunctival tissues that line the inner surface of the eyelids and cover the eyeball, causing drying of the tissues. CARDIAC (OFA) Subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS) is one of the most common congenital heart defects of dogs. The disease is characterized by obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract, resulting in pressure overload on the left ventricle. VAGINAL PROLAPSE: (Dam) is the protrusion of swollen vaginal tissue through the vulva, the external female genital organ, during the heat cycle. In vaginal prolapse, the swollen protruding vaginal tissue may resemble that of a donut shaped mass. Sometimes the mass is mistaken as a tumor. CRYPTORCHIDISM: (Sire) [from the Greek crypto, meaning hidden, and orkhis or orchid, meaning testicles] is the medical term for the condition that occurs when one or both testicles of a male dog fail to descend into the scrotum. Piebald color in Boerboels is different; there was a time when it was frowned upon. The dogs with more than 30% white were hard culled. White in fur is not a color it is the lack of melanin in their skin. Thus leaving the dog's skin exposed and vunerable to the African Sun. Fortunantly for this beloved breed both the Livernose and Piebald color Boerboels, more people bring their dogs indoors. So trying to extinguish these beautiful traits is no longer necessary.

The piebald color in Boerboels does not originate from a single bloodline but is a result of a recessive piebald gene that exists within the breed's broader gene pool. This gene has been present for a long time, and some older, original Boerboels, particularly those with "modest heads and volume," had this gene. Modern instances of piebald coloring are sometimes seen alongside newer bloodlines that may have been mixed with mastiff-type breeds or other large dogs, but the genetic potential for piebald exists within the original 72 South African Boerboel stock itself.

Inherent trait: The piebald gene is a recessive gene that has always been a part of the Boerboel's genetics.
Ancient origins: Some of the most legendary Boerboels were bred from dogs with piebald markings, indicating its presence in the breed's history.

Modern influences: While the gene is inherent, modern-day piebald Boerboels may show influence from newer crosses with other large mastiff breeds, which can sometimes bring the trait to the forefront in new lineages.

Markings: Piebald Boerboels can have either "piebald" or "Irish" markings, which include white patches along with other colors.

Breeding With A Purpose

For 18 years OTR (Over The Road) trucking is what I done for a living and loved every breath taking moment of it. Until November 27, 2017 a careless commercial truck driver took it all away from me. In this accident I sustained injuries that crippled me and resulting in an emergency surgery or risk permanent paralyzation. Now out of work and a family that needed my support, this all took me to a very dark place. Through it all my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ kept from losing it all. After rehab and learning to walk again my Dr. suggest I get a dog to assist me. That’s how my Boerboel love affair all began.

After first being captivated by the sheer awesomeness of the South African Boerboel breed, I must admit, I was in love. So the pursuit of this love affair began with buying not one but two puppies. Yes, now I realize that was not where you start, because that start could have very well been the beginning of the most horrific nightmare. Desiring to know more about my amazing puppies I began to research:


  • First, with the origin and history of the South African Boerboel breed. This answered some of my how, what, and why's.

  • Secondly, with wanting to meet other owners of the same breed I joined the American Boerboel Club and Boerboel Owners Group, a FB social media group. It was here where I got my first fright. Hearing and seeing all the genetic health issues being uncovered in the breed with some being debilitating and even life threatening.
