When you have ground that nothing grows!!
It's been exactly 20 years since I built this pond . Planted the weeping beech tree , and the weeping Norway I have such horrible ground all around the Beach nothing will stay alive or grow around it as you see here , I have planted yr after yr , added so much mushroom mulch and I always loose my plants , the water roots to this tree are so thick they suffocate everything.
I decided to tear apart my falls all my stonework shifts yr after yr, I came up with a new idea because I wish to turn my falls into a more eco, all natural way to clean my water by adding plants allowing the roots to help purify the water as it does in nature. I've had the top of my flow falls, I had a faux stone cover witch keeps algae from growing there but I'm going to use plants.
So I also wanted plants surrounding the falls and sice no plants grow I decided to do two different ideas I came up with I had 2 Rubbermaid trash cans filled them with mushroom mulch and sat the cans on both sides of the falls. Drilled holes in bottom , used an exacto knife to cut top edge to desired height to hide lip of can. Then to the back I added thick pond felt liner material and used as a liner in the rocks ,filled with soil and plated my plants I will post an updated photo close up to show you exactly what that looks like. Always be careful when moving your falls be sure to check if you are loosing water , stones shifting and falling can make a splash and you can loose water slowly or fast so keep careful eye for that. Also adding decorative pots and plant hostas and ferns in they are great in pots and if you cover up for winter the hostas grow back up and no more buying plants every yr.
