What the ?!?!

Sorry to all you rock fans out there 🥲

The MTV Video Music Awards dropped their full nominations list for their upcoming 2026 show…and many fans quickly noticed that they FULLY abandoned the Best Rock category…

Instead, the award show put all indie, rock, and adjacent genres into the exisiting “Best Alternative” category.

In 2025, Coldplay’s "ALL MY LOVE" took home the win in the Best Rock category, while sombr won the Best Alternative category with “back to friends.”

Previously, the MTV VMAs offered a Best Heavy Metal Video category in 1989, which ultimately became the Best Rock category by 1997.

So…if you are a metal fan…it looks like the MTV VMAs effectively pushed your fave genre out of the running💀

If you do want to catch the VMAs live show, you can catch it on September 27 at 7:30 PM. ET on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+.
