Is there any instance in which we here at Super Empty wouldn’t throw our endorsement behind a bill, introduced by a North Carolina politician, intended to champion working musicians?

That was the question raised last week when the office of got in touch about a new bill called the Protect Working Musicians Act, and sought our help with amplification. This may not be the approach that all would want to take, and undoubtedly some of our artist friends, in dire need of a more equitable pay structure with streaming companies, will find it to be a fight not worth having. But in 2026, to address one injustice while fueling an even greater one feels like treading water in a moment that demands drastic, radical change.

In this week’s very atypical SE newsletter, a reminder that art is not just about amplifying, but also about truth-telling. And if a politician wants help with the former, they’d better be prepared for the latter, too.

Earlier this month, Phuzz Phest descended on downtown Winston-Salem for the first time in a decade, and SE contributor was there to take it all in. Her impressions? Even after all that time away, organizers hardly missed a beat. More than sound logistical ex*****on and quality music, Phuzz served up what downtown, multi-venue festival should aspire to: a momentary, community-oriented suspension of reality. At the link in bio, read about a weekend on which every choice is the right one, time is merely a construct, and the wandering is half the point.
