We've been informed that multiple property owners have received fraudulent invoices and even contract approval letters from individuals claiming to represent the City.
Please use extra caution when receiving unexpected invoices, payment requests, or emails that appear to come from the City. The City will not ask citizens to wire money in response to an invoice or unexpected email.
Before making a payment or providing any personal or financial information:
Verify the sender. Emails from City officials generally follow the format of first initial + last name and will come from an official City email address ending in .city or .org.
Do not click links or open attachments if you are unsure about the message.
Do not wire money or send payment until you have confirmed the request is legitimate.
Watch for suspicious email addresses, unusual wording, spelling errors, unexpected urgency, or requests for payment through unfamiliar methods.
If you receive an invoice or email that looks suspicious, contact the appropriate City department directly to verify its legitimacy before taking any action. When in doubt, verify!
If you have received a similar fraudulent invoice or believe you may have been targeted by a scam, please contact the Fernandina Beach Police Department to report the incident.
Please share this information with your neighbors, friends, and anyone who may receive City-related correspondence. A few extra seconds of verification can help prevent someone from becoming a victim of fraud.
