Nothing lasts quite like the printed word. And such a valuable commodity should be at the top of every giver’s list this Christmas.

What books make great gifts?

Art books
Poetry collections
Classic literature
Authentic historic accounts
Childhood favorites
Local interest stories

While digital media is all the rage, it’s easily changeable and easily lost. Printed books are dependable, permanent, and personal. Consider a printed book for each person on your list. There truly is something for everyone.

Hans and Margret were desperate to escape Paris as N**i tanks rolled in in 1940. Having no transportation, Hans assembled bicycles for them from spare parts. Before dawn they dressed warmly and tucked a few possessions in their coats. Amazingly, they bicycled 800 km. through France, found the means to sail to Brazil, and eventually reached New York. Even more amazing was what they tucked inside their coats…the manuscript and sketches for Curious George! The first in the series was published the following year. Thank you, Hans and Margret, for your gift to children around the world!

Little by little you can accomplish a lot.

When I was a homeschooled teen, I was introduced to great history books, and because of that, I learned early on the truth of American history. As I began to see a new kind of history being shared on the internet, I would read stories and articles and think, "How do people believe this stuff?"

I knew the truth because I had grown up reading history books and historical fiction based on primary sources, and I read the primary sources themselves. But in American education, they stopped teaching this way a long time ago. That's why people so easily believe untruths.

The most important thing you can learn from ALL of the primary sources in American history is that no people group was "this" or "that." Humans are different, all over the world and all througout time. They have left us some very interesting stories and some great (and terrible) movements.

One of the great movements was started by the Puritans at Plymouth colony in 1620, and it had an incredible domino effect that we still enjoy today.

400 years ago, William Bradford and Edward Winslow wrote a journal of their first year at the Plymouth Colony, complete with the text of the Mayflower Compact, a diary of searching for and creating their settlement, their friendship with the Wompanoags, their long-standing treaty with Massassoit, and much much more. It was sent back to England and published in 1622, and came to be known as "Mourt's Relation."

Now this book is the latest in the Knowledge Keepers series! I have republished a 1963 version that was edited with some very insightful information, and I added my own commentary between each section. Also included is the complete text of a famous sermon preached to the Pilgrims by Robert Cushman entitled "The Sin and Danger of Self Love." If that doesn't help you to understand the Pilgrims of the Plymough settlement, nothing will.

Its a short book, and now is the perfect time to read it with your family! Availsble on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3TaBw5L

This is how I build my knowledge keepers library at home.

I was alerted to a closet full of books that were being thrown out at a house flip, and I hurried over to rescue what I could. My son was working at the site, and was told to throw the books in the dumpster. Having read Fahrenheit 451, he said, “I felt like a Fireman, throwing the books in the dumpster.” He gave me the heads-up. 😍

These are firsthand accounts, autobiographies, and other similar primary sources. They were freeeeeee. Some of them have potential for a future volume in the Knowledge Keepers Bookstore!

If you haven’t read Fahrenheit 451, go do it now. https://amzn.to/469qJQd And then go out and rescue some good books from a thrift store, yard sale, or library sale.

A home library isn’t just for the current residents. It’s a legacy we leave for our children and their children. It’s a gift to future generations.
