When I was a homeschooled teen, I was introduced to great history books, and because of that, I learned early on the truth of American history. As I began to see a new kind of history being shared on the internet, I would read stories and articles and think, "How do people believe this stuff?"
I knew the truth because I had grown up reading history books and historical fiction based on primary sources, and I read the primary sources themselves. But in American education, they stopped teaching this way a long time ago. That's why people so easily believe untruths.
The most important thing you can learn from ALL of the primary sources in American history is that no people group was "this" or "that." Humans are different, all over the world and all througout time. They have left us some very interesting stories and some great (and terrible) movements.
One of the great movements was started by the Puritans at Plymouth colony in 1620, and it had an incredible domino effect that we still enjoy today.
400 years ago, William Bradford and Edward Winslow wrote a journal of their first year at the Plymouth Colony, complete with the text of the Mayflower Compact, a diary of searching for and creating their settlement, their friendship with the Wompanoags, their long-standing treaty with Massassoit, and much much more. It was sent back to England and published in 1622, and came to be known as "Mourt's Relation."
Now this book is the latest in the Knowledge Keepers series! I have republished a 1963 version that was edited with some very insightful information, and I added my own commentary between each section. Also included is the complete text of a famous sermon preached to the Pilgrims by Robert Cushman entitled "The Sin and Danger of Self Love." If that doesn't help you to understand the Pilgrims of the Plymough settlement, nothing will.
Its a short book, and now is the perfect time to read it with your family! Availsble on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3TaBw5L
