"You can have the time of your life, and you barely hike." 🐦

Justin Justroc Rimon from JUST TREKℒ️ on how birding rewired the way he moves through a trail. One morning at the Malibu Lagoon and he was hooked, now the win isn't the summit or the mileage, it's what you noticed on the way. πŸ”

Half a mile. Ravens on the ridge. A night heron stalking through the duckweed like it has all day.

He calls it his naturalist era. We call it one of the best conversations of Season 15.

There's one hike that still sits with me. πŸ₯Ύ

Last year in New Zealand, I made it up to Lake Marian near Milford Sound in about an hour β€” easy. The descent though, was far from easy πŸ˜…

The way down took twice as long: rain-slicked rock, poles slipping, shoes slipping, and the only moment on any hike where I genuinely wondered if I'd need to hit SOS.

It's the story behind this Season's "Trail That Broke Me vs Trail That Made me" answer β€” and it's just one piece of this week's 4-year anniversary episode, where longtime guest and friend πšπšŠπš–πš’ πš˜πš— πšπš‘πšŽ πšπš›πšŠπš’πš• turns the tables and interviews me.

Life finds a way (and it's rooted in a stump) 🌲πŸͺ΅

Found this one on the Berg Lake Trail in Mt. Robson Provincial Park, a young 🌲 growing straight up out of an old stump, roots wrapping down the sides like it's holding on for dear life. Nature's version of "new season, who dis."

This is what a "nurse log" (well, nurse stump) is all about β€” the old tree breaks down and feeds the next generation, literally passing the torch. Forest succession never looked so photogenic.

Happy ! Shoutout to Bekka for helping us stop and look up (or in this case, down) on the trail.

There's a spot near Moab that only shows its secret a few weeks a year. πŸβ˜€οΈ

A local tipped off Larkin about a hidden petroglyph where sunlight slips through a crack in the cliff face and forms a perfect arrowhead of light...right on the head of a snake carving. Blink and you'll miss it.

Larkin went a few weeks before the actual solstice (smart move β€” high 80s beats 100Β°F) and caught it firsthand.

Some moments in the backcountry change you forever.

After nearly 20 hours waiting for rescue in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, Meg Atteberry describes the overwhelming moment the helicopter finally landed.

The relief. The fear. The exhaustion. The flood of emotions after holding it together for so long.

It’s a powerful reminder that even the most experienced hikers can face the unexpectedβ€”and why preparation matters.

Sometimes the summit is knowing when to turn around. πŸ”οΈ

Five Yakima Valley Trekkers members and I set out June 18th for a two-day climb of Mt. Adamsβ€”2nd tallest in WA. We trained since April. The forecast cooperated. Permits in hand, we went up.

Then the heat rewrote the plan. The snow never refroze overnightβ€”by sunrise we were walking on mashed potatoes. Group after group turned back. Then on the descent I punched through a snow trap to my hip on a melting bridge above a real drop. The snow held me. Lunch Counter became our high point. Crampons off, glissade down, everyone home safe. πŸ™

The reward? St. Helens, Hood, and Jefferson glowing from camp and the shadow of Adams stretching across the valley at dawn. Worth every step. Adams, I'll see you next year. 🀝

πŸŽ™οΈ Season 15 starts now!

Outdoor educator and former pro writer Meg Atteberry joins us to share an unforgettable backcountry survival story from Wyoming’s Wind River High Route, where a hiking partner’s devastating injury led to a 20-hour rescue deep in the wilderness.

We also talk about overcoming a fear of heights, backpacking with her 4-year-old, running her first ultra, and the lessons every hiker should know before heading into the backcountry.

This premiere is packed with adventure, resilience, and practical safety tips you won’t want to miss. 🎧πŸ₯Ύ
