One question that comes up from time to time is whether I'll adopt another dog.

The answer is yes, someday I absolutely hope to have another Heeler riding shotgun.

But timing is part of the decision.

Every summer I spend a few months in Arizona working through my son's guardianship procedures. It's an important responsibility, but it also creates a very different environment than the one I normally live in.

Riven adapted to it because he had years to learn the routine. Even then, he wasn't exactly a fan of city life, hotels, traffic, or temperatures much above the 70s.

If the right dog comes along, I'll consider it.

Bringing a new dog into the crew means giving them the best chance to learn this lifestyle the right way. The 4Runner, travel days, camp life, new places, city stretches, heat, hotels, and all the little routines that make this life work.

So for now, I'm staying open while also being realistic. I miss having a dog around, but I'd rather be patient and make the right decision than rush into the wrong one.

Some things are worth waiting for.

This was my Blue Heeler's version of patience. Riven had a schedule, and it rarely matched mine.

The second he suspected a walk was about to happen, the countdown began.

Every task after that was met with this look.

The look of a dog wondering why I was making such poor decisions with my time.

Apparently grabbing water, putting things away, and checking the 4Runner were all standing between him and important trail business.

He was not impressed.

Most people never see this part of the forest.

Volume up.

This trail cam video caught an owl stopping by for a late-night meal before spending a few moments keeping watch over the forest.

The nature night sounds of are worth listening to too.

The trail cams were busy with the wildlife in Prescott National Forest

A fox made an appearance. If you look closely, you’ll spot the next resident too.

And then the last clip reminded me why I love setting these cameras up.

Watch to the end for the best part.

You can camp in the same place, walk the same area, notice tracks and little signs, and still have no idea what passed through after dark.

Or during the day.

There’s this unspoken pressure in nomadic life that movement is the whole point.

Like if you’re not rolling toward the next view, you’re somehow doing it wrong.

Full-time car camping has a way of making that lesson unavoidable

Some of my most important weeks don’t look like adventure. They look like laundry, maintenance, restocking food, sorting gear, catching up on admin work, and letting my body reset before the next stretch.

Staying put isn’t failing at the lifestyle.

It’s part of what makes the lifestyle sustainable.

A lot of freedom gets built on the ordinary days nobody photographs.

One of the most important systems in this camping and traveling lifestyle is water.

Easy to focus on campsites, gear, and destinations. But none of that works if your water plan falls apart.

This week's download covers water management. What I think about, use, and plan for on the road.

Not the most exciting topic. Definitely one of the most useful.
