Seen… But At What Cost? Barbie, Autism, and Why I’m Not Shutting Up
In this episode of Dat D@mn Duche$$, I’m unpacking the post that sparked a lot of conversation — and a lot of feelings — around Autistic Barbie and what “representation” really means.
Let me be clear from the jump: this episode is not about discrediting anyone who felt seen. Visibility matters. Feeling acknowledged matters. But as a parent of autistic children, an advocate, and someone who sees autism every single day, I’m allowed to speak from my lived experience — and I’m not going to silence myself to make others comfortable.
We break down:
• Why selective representation can unintentionally box neurodivergent children in
• How some kids may feel empowered by Autistic Barbie — and why that still deserves respect
• The harm of presenting autism as one “look,” one behavior, or one set of tools
• How school systems and IEP processes often reinforce narrow definitions of autism
• Why being verbal, not using AAC devices, or not displaying stereotypical stims doesn’t make a child “less autistic”
• The role of implicit bias in disability advocacy and education
• Why autism is not a trend — and neurodivergent people don’t have a single image
I also read and reflect on community comments (without naming or shaming), because perspective matters — even when we disagree.
This episode isn’t about being right.
It’s about being honest.
And while I welcome conversation, emails, and guest appearances from anyone who wants to share their viewpoint, one thing is non-negotiable: I’m not shutting up about how I feel.
