On May 31, La BelleWerk Modeling and Booking Agency hosted its fifth annual 810 Spring Fashion Show at Brush Alley Skateshop in downtown Flint. Bringing local designers, models, artists and businesses together in Flint as the event provides exposure for local creatives in modeling, fashion, design, hair, makeup, photography and media production.

Adriana Lanice, founder of La BelleWerk Modeling and Booking Agency, said that she was inspired by her personal experiences in the fashion industry to create 810 Fashion — an extension of La BelleWerk Modeling and Booking Agency — to feature designers, fashion industry professionals and models within the Flint community.

On May 30, the Flint Institute of Arts hosted The Party: Arts of the Ancients, the annual FIA fundraising event, in partnership with Shea Automotive.

Now on its fourteenth year, the event comes from collaboration involving FIA leadership, staff, volunteers, and over 70 sponsors, including Greater Michigan Oral Surgeons, Karlene Dermatology and Sorensen Gross, as well as a planning committee working throughout the year to put together the event.

On Saturday, May 30, the Flint City Bucks faced off against the Kalamazoo Football Club for their first home game of the season at Atwood Stadium in downtown Flint. The final score was 7-0, Flint City Bucks.

No.20 Sean Albritton scored the first goal of the game for the Flint City Bucks, assisted by fielder No.18 Ollie Moller-Jensen at the 17-minute mark.

The second goal followed immediately after in the 19th minute, scored by No.10 Dominic Ayella, with the assist from No.23 Jack Roman.

On Saturday, May 30, Edible Flint hosted Children’s Day at the Farm at the Edible Flint Educational Farm in Flint. It is the first of three events from May until September. The event included volunteers and families who spent the morning planting in the garden, potting plants, playing games and storytime sessions. This event was sponsored by a grant through the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network after partnering with the MSU Extension-Genesee County in Flint.

The grant Edible Flint received from the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network was originally used for storytime sessions at Edible Flint’s farm, but eventually it grew to support more events like field trips, crafts, farm walks and planting activities.

People Powered Flint has organized a mayoral panel series of three different panels for the candidates running for the mayor of Flint. On May 27, two out of the four candidates, Micaiah Owens and Rashonda Womack, attended the first panel and answered questions from the public.

PPF is a volunteer-based political coalition that performs civic action, canvassing and informs local Flint communities about ballot initiatives.

The University of Michigan invested $20 million into ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI, according to legal documents filed in February of 2024, which alleged that CEO Sam Altman violated the company’s mission statement and prioritized profits over safety.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in February 2024. Musk was a co-founder and board member for OpenAI from December 2015 to February 2018. In the lawsuit filed, Musk alleged that Altman did not uphold the company’s original mission, which was to create a safe platform for open space artificial general intelligence for humanity’s benefit.

On May 23, The Flint Monster Society hosted its fourth annual Sinister Swamp Meet at Flint Local 432, with over 130 people in attendance.

The Flint Monster Society was created by Chris Rignler in 2022. The goal of the Flint Monster society is to bring “more affordable weirdness” to Flint and Mid-Michigan.

“These sorts of events are important to help foster the arts and creative scene this area has, and to encourage people to get out there, get involved, and to bring a little more weird,” Ringler said. “I really love finding ways to promote and support the great creatives in the area… to remind folks how many incredibly talented people are right here.”

The University of Michigan-Flint hosted “Trey Day” on May 14 in the Riverfront Conference Center in downtown Flint to celebrate Flint-native and 2026 National Collegiate Athletics Association Men’s Basketball National champion, Trey McKenney.

McKenney was awarded the key to the city of Flint by Flint City Mayor Sheldon Neely and had a resolution passed by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners to recognize May 14 as “Trey Day” in Genesee County to honor his achievements.

One of our writers/photographers, Rylie Yeiter, recently attended Zine Fest. The event was held on May 2 at Factory Two located in Flint.

The artistic focused event featured self-published small press books and art pieces from Flint-based and national artists, alongside music from local bands and food trucks.

The festival hosted over 50 artists, including well-known zine artists Taylor Blossom and Hedge Hog Books, as well as Michigan-based music educator, guitarist and writer, Shea Socrates.
