Shoals area residents are starting their mornings informed thanks to Jeff Roland’s daily Shoals Insider radio newscast, airing every weekday morning across four popular local stations: WLAY 100.1, WVNA Big Dog 105.5, My 101.5, and 94.9.
The newscast begins at 6 a.m. and then airs on the hour at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., and 9 a.m., delivering concise, up-to-date coverage of the Shoals area’s most important stories of the day. From breaking news and public safety updates to government, community, and local interest stories, Roland’s reports have become a morning staple for listeners across Northwest Alabama.
Roland’s passion for broadcasting runs deep. He began his career at just 21 years old, when he and his father owned and operated an oldies radio station serving the Huntsville and Marshall County markets during the 1990s. That early start laid the foundation for a lifelong career in media and storytelling.
“I truly enjoy bringing late-breaking news to the Shoals area,” Roland said. “It’s hard work and involves late hours, but I’ve really been blessed to do something that I’m so passionate about.”
Never one to take himself too seriously, Roland often jokes that his path into journalism was written from the start. “My mother’s name was Lois and my father’s name was Lane,” he said with a laugh. “So I guess it was just meant to be.”
In addition to his radio work, Roland is the founder and Editor-In-Chief of Shoals Insider, a large rapidly growing local news platform on Facebook that now boasts more than 91,000 followers. Its companion community group What’s Happening Shoals, has grown to over 90,000 members, making it the largest local online news provider in the Shoals.
“We get around 40 million views every 28 days, according to Facebook,” Roland said. “We’ve truly been blessed.”
Through digital media, radio, and social platforms, Jeff Roland continues to play a central role in keeping the Shoals informed—starting each weekday morning before sunrise and carrying the day’s stories to the community he calls home.
