Eugene Police has located a hidden camera believed to be monitoring an Asian family and believes this activity could be related to previous burglaries targeting Asian homes and valuables while they are at work. A suspicious vehicle was also spotted. Please keep watch for your neighbors, check and monitor shrubbery for hidden cameras, and call Eugene Police if you see suspicious cars or delivery vehicles that may be out of place and occupied in your neighborhood during daytime hours. The suspects have attempted to deflect suspicion by wearing delivery company vests, reflective vests or impersonating other types of legitimate crews.

In the past, the rings have targeted Asian business owners and other professionals. The burglars appear to have screened/surveilled their potential victims, blocked or jammed surveillance devices, then broken into the homes while the victims are at work. Hardwired video surveillance and home security systems are more difficult for the burglars to defeat. Simple audible alarms on loudspeakers that don’t rely on a wireless system, even if not tied to a notification center, can have a significant deterrent effect.

On June 8, Eugene Police notified the public after becoming aware of organized burglary cases in two other cities in Oregon (Beaverton and Salem), which fit the M.O. of previous burglaries targeting Asian homeowners. In both cases, jewelry, cash, car keys, and other similar items of value were taken. The homes where these types of burglaries occur are not related to a specific area but rather to the selection of victims who are believed to have valuables and cash at hom
