By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country. But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place. Over 20 million Native Americans dispersed across over 1,000 distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups populated the territory.
The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia.The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Mi’kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.

The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the “Glory Days.” It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the “Glory Days” of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.

Mîkwâc, nitôtêm – Let me tell you about another time the sun stood still.A long time ago, in the days when the trees still spoke in the old tongue and the rivers carried stories from the stars to the roots, there lived a young boy named Wâpikwan, whose name meant flower that opens to the dawn. He was born in early summer, under the watchful eye of the rising sun, and from the moment he could walk, he followed the light.
He was curious, that one. Always asking questions of the birds, the clouds, the wind. “Where does the sun go when it’s gone?” he once asked. His grandmother just smiled and said, “You’ll know when you’re ready.”

Now, when Wâpikwan turned twelve winters, his dreams began to change. He started hearing songs—not with his ears, but with his heart. Songs of the old ones. Of fire. Of sky. Of balance. They would come just before dawn and leave him sitting wide-eyed long after the morning mist had lifted.

Then one day, the Elders came to him and said, “The solstice is near. It is the longest light of the year. On that day, the sun will wait for you. You must climb the high hill at first light. Go alone. Bring nothing but your breath.”

So Wâpikwan did as he was told. He rose before the birds, walked barefoot through the dew, and climbed that ancient hill the old ones called Nîpiy-wâsakâm, where the waters rise in fog.

At the top, he stood still. He waited. Hours passed. The sun climbed higher—and higher—and then, for one heartbeat, it stopped. Not in the sky, but in him. A silence wrapped around the world like a warm blanket.

And in that silence, he heard it clearly—the voice of the sun:

“I do not rise for myself, little one. I rise because the people need warmth, need light, need time. I give it freely. So must you. Whatever you are meant to become, it is not for you alone. It is for those still in shadow.”

Wâpikwan wept. Not out of sadness, but because now he understood.

He returned home with fire in his eyes and stillness in his step. From that day on, he was never just a boy chasing the sun. He was a keeper of light, a bringer of time.

And every solstice after, he would lead the children up that same hill. They would sit in the hush of morning, feel the stillness, and hear the truth:

That the light does not belong to us.
We belong to the light.

Choctaw TribeThe Choctaw were first noted by Europeans in French written records of 1675. Their mother mound is Nanih Waiya, a great earthwork platform mound located in central-east Mississippi. Early Spanish explorers of the mid-16th century in the Southeast encountered ancestral Mississippian culture villages and chiefs.
The Choctaw coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed at least three distinct political and geographical divisions: eastern, western, and southern. These different groups sometimes created distinct, independent alliances with nearby European powers. These included the French, based on the Gulf Coast and in Louisiana; the English of the Southeast, and the Spanish of Florida and Louisiana during the colonial era.
Most Choctaw allied with the Americans during American Revolution, War of 1812, and the Red Stick War, most notably at the Battle of New Orleans. European Americans considered the Choctaw to be one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" of the Southeast. The Choctaw and the United States agreed to a total of nine treaties. By the last three, the US gained vast land cessions in the Southeast. As part of Indian Removal, despite not having waged war against the United States, the majority of Choctaw were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory from 1831 to 1833. The Choctaw government in Indian Territory had three districts, each with its own chief, who together with the town chiefs sat on their National Council.
Those Choctaw who chose to stay in the state of Mississippi were considered state and U.S. citizens; they were one of the first major non-European ethnic groups to be granted citizenship. Article 14 in the 1830 treaty with the Choctaw stated Choctaws may wish to become citizens of the United States under the 14th Article of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek on all of the combined lands which were consolidated under Article I from all previous treaties between the United States and the Choctaw.
During the American Civil War, the Choctaw in both Indian Territory and Mississippi mostly sided with the Confederate States of America. Under the late 19th-century Dawes Act and Curtis Acts, the US federal government broke up tribal land holdings and dissolved tribal governments in Indian Territory in order to extinguish Indian land claims before admission of Oklahoma as a state in 1907. From that period, for several decades the US Bureau of Indian Affairs appointed chiefs of the Choctaw and other tribes in the former Indian Territory.
During World War I, Choctaw soldiers served in the US military as some of the first Native American codetalkers, using the Choctaw language. Since the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the Choctaw people in three areas have reconstituted their governments and gained federal recognition. The largest are the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma.
