The police and Mayor of San Fernando sabotaged the Midnight Mas celebration by cutting it off prematurely, with no clear reason given.

Masqueraders were left in shock and utter disappointment after spending their hard-earned money to purchase Midnight Mas packages from bands — only to have the experience taken away without warning.

Events like these take months of planning, sacrifice, and investment. Vendors prepare, bands prepare, masqueraders prepare — and in a moment, it was shut down. No explanation. No consideration.

For too long, factors like this have been allowed to destroy the Carnival celebration in San Fernando, Trinidad. Carnival is culture. Carnival is livelihood. Carnival is freedom of expression.

If we continue like this, what message are we sending to promoters, small businesses, and the young people trying to keep the culture alive?

San Fernando deserves better. Our culture deserves respect.

Chutney Soca Monarch 2026 – A Disrespect to the Culture

CSM 2026 was nothing short of a disrespect and mockery of East Indian culture, which this show is supposed to represent and celebrate.

To start, the event began over two hours late, showing a complete lack of respect for patrons, artistes, and the culture itself.

Many of the performances lacked originality, with artistes repeatedly performing old songs and recycled material, most of which were simply covers of classic Indian songs. A competition of this level should be pushing Chutney music forward, not dragging it backward.

As a longtime Machel Montano fan, I was especially disappointed. Adding tassa drums to a soca song does not suddenly make it chutney—especially when the song has always been promoted as a soca track. Even worse, the performance reused the same props from last year, which I personally witnessed. This felt like a blatant disregard for the Chutney genre and its authenticity.

Over the years, the actions of the promoter, Southex / George Singh, have repeatedly raised serious concerns. This competition increasingly appears unfair and driven by profit, rather than merit. For years now, many have noticed that winners often seem to be those closely associated with the promoter. This competition seriously needs transparency and proper investigation.

In my honest opinion, Rasika Dindial, the Rani, was the clear and rightful winner of CSM 2026. Her vocals were flawless, her song was 100% original, and her presentation was simple, beautiful, and told a powerful story—everything Chutney Soca Monarch should stand for.

Sadly, this disappointment is nothing new. Year after year, it has become clear that CSM is no longer a fair competition, but one centered around favoritism rather than talent.

Chutney Soca deserves better.
