This is 14-year-old Carly Gregg.

Carly Gregg was born in Flowood, Mississippi, USA, to her mother, Ashley, and her father Kevin. However, it’s been reported that Kevin Gregg was not regularly in the picture for most of Carly’s life.

Carly was an extremely smart student, however, she was interested in some concerning things, such as Swiss knives, violence, and gore. When Carly was in the 7th grade, she was sent to an alternative school for 6 months, for bringing a Swiss knife to school.

After being released from alternative school, Carly attended North West Rankin High School in Brandon Mississippi. She was reportedly an exemplary student. In the year of 2022, Carly won her high schools “Student of the Year” award, and even skipped a grade.

Unfortunately, being in a class with all older kids comes with peer pressures, and it wasn’t long before Carly began drinking alcohol, va**ng ni****ne, and smoking ma*****na.

On top of her substance abuse issues, Carly sadly also suffered some severe mental health issues. Her friends reported she had begun self-harming, and as a result, Carly’s mother immediately sought therapy for her daughter. Eventually, Carly was prescribed the anti-psychotic Lexapro, which is primarily used to treat major depression.

The day of the murder started off as a pretty normal day for the family. Ashley Smiley took Carly to school, and Ashley’s husband, Heath Smiley, left for work only a few minutes later. Witnesses report that nothing seemed “off” about the way Carly was interacting with her mother the day of the incident.

After school, Carly & Ashley arrived at home, where Carly then took her dogs for a walk as she usually does around this time. This is when Ashley would take the opportunity to search Carly’s room, after a classmate of Carly’s made a concerning comment regarding her drug and alcohol use. Unfortunately, Ashley found 4 vapes in Carly’s room during this search.

When Carly gets back from her walk, she’s seen on home video walking toward the direction of her bedroom, and sees her mom sitting on her bed, holding the 4 vapes she found. She immediately leaves, walks to her parents bedroom, and and retrieves a 38 pistol revolver.

Sadly, the footage from inside the home gives clear audio of Carly walking back into her bedroom and shooting her mother 3 times.

Carly would then grab her mothers phone, and text Heath Smiley “Are you almost home, Honey?” to which he replied “No, I’ll be here a little longer.”

Carly then retrieved her own phone to text sevral friends, letting them know something bad had happened and that she was “freaking out”.

An unnamed friend of Carly’s actually came to her house to see what was going on. When she arrived, Carly was sitting in her living room, before reportedly looking up and saying “Do you get squeamish around dead bodies?” before leading her friend into the bedroom, where she had shot her mother, Ashley.

Only a few minutes later, Heath Smiley arrived home. Upon entering his house, Carly shot him multiple times, thankfully only grazing him in the shoulder. Carly is seen on camera fleeing the scene of the crime with the friend she invited over.

Since Heath survived, he was able to give police a description of Carly & what she was wearing when she ran away.

Carly was arrested only 2 miles away from her house in Flowood, Mississippi. She was brought into interrogation and upon interview, claimed she was hearing voices that told her to harm herself and others.

Carly could be seen sobbing in court, as video footage of the murder, as well as the body cam footage of Heath were shown. Carly’s defense team tried to argue insanity, but refused to turn over Carly’s medical records.

Ultimately, Carly was found guilty of the 1st-degree-murder of Ashley Smiley, the Attempted Murder of Heath Smiley, and Tampering with Evidence.

On September 20th, 2024, she was given life without the possibility of parole at the age of 15.

This is 6-year-old Carl Newton Mahan.

Carl Newton Mahan was born on September 22nd, 1922 in Johnson, Kentucky, USA, to his father, John W. Mahan Sr., and his mother, Cora Dixon.

Unfortunately, there’s not much public information regarding Carls early life before the age of 6. However, his family did move to Paintville, Kentucky sometime during his toddler years.

On May 18th, 1929, Carl Newton Mahan (age 6.) and Cecil Van Hoose (age 8.) were at a scrapyard where they began arguing over a sheet of discarded iron. Allegedly, Cecil took the scrap of iron away from Carl, slapping him in the face.

According to articles in The Cincinnati Enquirer, Carl ran away from Cecil, went home, and climbed up on a chair. He took down his father's 12-gauge shotgun, which was kept above the door. Carl went back outside and shouted to Cecil, “I'm going to shoot you!” Then he squeezed the trigger.

This was the day Carl Newton Mahan became the youngest (intentional) killer in American History.

Less than a week after Carl shot his friend, the 6-year-old was on trial for murder. Carl told the court how he came to kill his friend. Then, through the rest of the daylong trial, he lay on the defense counsel's table and sometimes slept.

After fewer than 30 minutes of deliberations, a jury convicted Carl of the lesser charge of manslaughter. The Johnson County judge sentenced him to 15 years in reform school, however, a Circuit Court judge set aside the conviction and issued a “writ of prohibition” that prevented Carl from being sent to reform school.

The writ said the county judge had exceeded his authority by allowing Carl to be tried criminally before a jury. Normally, juvenile cases were decided by the county judge.

A month after Carl was sentenced, the attorney general announced that his review of the case was complete. He took no action, allowing the boy to remain with his parents.

Carl Newton Mahan remained free his entire life, and died by su***de at the age of 35, in 1958.
