The Charlton County Herald is a community newspaper serving Folkston, Homeland, St. George and all of Charlton County, Georgia. The paper is published weekly, placed on newsstands Tuesday evening and delivered to our subscribers by mail on Wednesdays, except when postal holidays alter the schedule. The Herald's news coverage focuses primarily on Charlton County, its cities and communities, as well as broader issues affecting its residents. The Herald is the legal organ for Charlton County.

🔥 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 – 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 / 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚 🔥

Ga Forestry and Charlton County Fire Rescue responders remain on scene today conducting mop-up operations and monitoring for hotspots within the fire area. The fire remains approximately 102 acres and 85% contained.

At this time, there are no road closures and no evacuation orders in effect.

Residents in the area should continue to remain aware of conditions, monitor official information sources for updates, and, as a general preparedness measure, have important items ready in the event conditions change and evacuation becomes necessary.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation, and no official determination has been made at this time.

As a reminder, outdoor burning should always be conducted in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety guidelines. Never leave a fire unattended, and always keep a water source, such as a charged garden hose, readily available nearby. Even under favorable conditions, fires can spread unexpectedly.

As of this update, the brush fire is estimated at approximately 102 acres and is 85% contained. Responders continue working to secure containment lines and monitor the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. We understand there has been discussion regarding the recent lifting of the local burn ban; however, it is important to remember that no official determination has been made regarding the cause of this incident.

🚨 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 – 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐑𝐝 / 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐭 𝐑𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚

Emergency crews are currently responding to a brush fire in the area of Newell Road and Eston Prescott Road.

Crews are focused on protecting nearby structures and preventing spread of the fire. There are currently no evacuation orders in place.

Please avoid the area and do not stop to watch emergency operations. Keeping roadways clear allows responding personnel and equipment to access the scene safely and efficiently.

If you are within 10 miles of this area please keep in mind that wildfire conditions change rapidly. Have your family, pets, and important items ready to go in the event evacuations are ordered.

Please do not self-depoy to bring any donations or goods directly to the scene. Coordinate with Charlton County EMA by emailing [email protected] with your name, a phone number, what it is that you would like to help with, and EMA will call you back to coordinate.

Charlton County EMA will provide additional updates as information becomes available.

Charlton County Burn ban lifted!!

The Charlton County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously at their meeting tonight to lift the burn ban. Please continue to exercise caution while burning outdoors, and remember to observe all applicable state and local burning regulations.
