Tonight at 9pm CT catch the rebroadcast of last nights Roots & Rebels, Caroline Cotto takes us straight to Chicago and into the heart of one of the most important labels in American music history… CHESS Records.
Founded in Chicago in 1950 by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, this little independent label became a powerhouse of electric blues, R&B, and early rock ’n’ roll. Chess captured the raw, fire-breathing energy of Southern Black musicians who made their way north during the Great Migration and plugged their sound into the Chicago streets.
We’ll be talking about the legends who called Chess home:
Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Etta James, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and more — the very artists who shaped what we now call rock and roll.
You’ll hear stories behind the songs, including one of Chess’s defining early records, Muddy Waters’ 1951 track “Long Distance Call,” with his unmistakable slide guitar and the groundbreaking harmonica work of Little Walter. This is the sound that electrified the blues and set the stage for everything that followed.
Join Caroline Cotto on Roots & Rebels, tonight at 7pm CT, as we turn up the volume on the history, the artists, and the legacy of Chess Records — the label that put Chicago blues and early rock ’n’ roll on the map.
What’s your favorite Chess Records artist or song?

Today in Rock and Roll History – December 12, 1957

On this day, Portland, Oregon DJ Al Priddy of radio station KEX found himself out of a job — all because he dared to spin Elvis Presley’s version of “White Christmas.” The station had issued a strict ban on playing the track, claiming Elvis’s bluesy, slow-burn rendition was “not in the spirit we associate with Christmas.”
Priddy ignored the order, played it anyway, and was promptly fired.
The controversy wasn’t unique to Portland — Elvis’s holiday album rattled many program directors and even drew backlash from songwriter Irving Berlin, who reportedly disliked the reinterpretation of his classic. But fans loved it, and over time Elvis’s “White Christmas” became one of the most recognizable (and best-selling) holiday recordings of the season.
It’s a reminder of just how disruptive Elvis truly was — even a Christmas carol could shake up the airwaves.

What’s your favorite Elvis Christmas song?

Today in Rock and Roll History – December 12, 1955
On this day, Bill Haley and His Comets stepped into Decca Records’ New York City studio to record one of their most enduring and good-time rock ’n’ roll classics — “See You Later, Alligator.” With its snappy call-and-response vocals, irresistible rhythm, and swaggering attitude, the song became an anthem of early rock’s playful spirit.
Released shortly after the massive success of “Rock Around the Clock,” the single climbed to #6 on the Billboard Top 100 and #7 in the UK, cementing Haley’s place as one of the genre’s first true superstars. It also became his third and final million seller, a testament to the excitement and energy he brought to the birth of Rock and Roll.
“See You Later, Alligator” remains a staple of the era — the kind of tune that instantly brings back the jukebox glow, the sock hop floor, and the feeling that rock ’n’ roll was brand new and ready to take over the world.

Do you have a favorite Bill Haley song or memory tied to his music?

Today in Rock and Roll History – December 12, 1943
On this day, the world welcomed Dickey Betts, a founding member, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for The Allman Brothers Band — a cornerstone figure in the creation of Southern Rock. Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Betts fused blues, country, jazz, and rock into a sound that became absolutely unmistakable.
His interplay with Duane Allman produced one of the most celebrated twin-guitar harmonies in music history, and his songwriting left an undeniable mark on American rock. Betts gave the world some of the Allmans’ most legendary recordings, including:
• “Ramblin’ Man” – the band’s biggest hit
• “Blue Sky”
• “Jessica” – which later became the beloved Top Gear theme
Sadly, the music world lost Dickey Betts on April 18, 2024, at the age of 80. His legacy, however, remains eternal — carried forward in every soaring guitar harmony, every road-trip playlist, and every fan who still gets chills hearing the opening notes of “Jessica” or “Blue Sky.”

What’s your favorite Dickey Betts moment or Allman Brothers song?
