When Sheriff Jeff Leikauf walked into Independence High School’s Thanksgiving feast, junior Lucas McRoberts never expected to see his former Big Brother again — but their reunion said everything.

Lucas has grown into a trusted leader on campus: straight-A student, conflict-resolver, volunteer, and someone Principal Jennifer Myers describes as “one of our main guys.” And through it all, he never forgot the mentor who helped guide him.

When Lucas shared how much Sheriff Leikauf had meant to him, Ms. Myers arranged a surprise visit. The moment they reconnected was powerful — a reminder of how early support can shape a young person’s entire trajectory.

For Sheriff Leikauf, it stirred years of memories: football games, family outings, and countless conversations that helped build who Lucas is today. “You don’t always realize the impact you’re making just by being in a young person’s life,” he said.
