Ready for a conversation that will completely shift how you see youth mental health?

We’re thrilled to welcome Will Dobud (Will Dobud PhD ) to this week’s episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast. Will is a social worker, academic, and co-author of Kids These Days, a book that’s quickly becoming essential reading for parents who want a clearer, more honest understanding of what today’s young people are facing.

Will brings a refreshing and deeply compassionate perspective — one that pushes back against the idea that kids are “broken” or need fixing. Instead, he shows us what young people really need: adults who listen, build trust, and honor their strengths.

We walked away from this conversation feeling hopeful, empowered, and more prepared to show up for the kids in our lives. You will too.

What if our kids aren’t the problem… but the systems around them are?

This week on The Warrior Parent Podcast, we’re speaking with Will Dobud (Will Dobud PhD ) — a social worker, researcher, and co-author of the groundbreaking new book Kids These Days: Understanding and Supporting Youth Mental Health.

Will’s work takes an unflinching look at where the mental health industry is failing our children — from over-labeling to harmful interventions — and offers a powerful alternative:
Trust. Relationship. And recognizing kids as the heroes of their own stories.

He challenges adults of all kinds — parents, guardians, therapists, teachers — to stop trying to “fix” youth and instead support them as they navigate the adventure of adolescence. Because our kids aren’t broken…
What needs to change is us.

This episode is honest, eye-opening, and full of hope for any parent trying to understand today’s youth mental health landscape.

Worried about what people think when your child melts down in public?

Marci shared one of Sam Mitchell’s ( ) most powerful pieces of advice for parents of neurodiverse kids:
Stop worrying about the crowd. Do what’s best for your child.

When your kid is overwhelmed, overstimulated, or having a hard moment, the goal isn’t to look “put together.” The goal is to help them feel safe again.

And here’s the truth, most people aren’t judging you.
They’re empathizing with you.
They’ve been there.
They understand.
Or they’re wishing they could give you a hand.

So take a breath.
Tune out the noise.
And support your child the way they need — not the way strangers might prefer.

Want to know one of the simplest ways to support a neurodiverse child? Ask.

During our conversation with Sam ( ) Marci shared something deeply personal about her own parenting journey: the most powerful shift came when she started asking her child on the spectrum, “What do you need?”

Not guessing.
Not assuming.
Not trying to fix everything.

Just asking.
And then truly listening.

It turns out this approach doesn’t just help our neurodiverse kids — it helps everyone. When we get curious instead of reactive, when we invite our kids to voice their needs, we create safety, trust, and a path forward that actually fits them.

It’s a reminder that support starts with connection.

Feeling unsure how to support your neurodiverse child?

In this episode, Sam Mitchell (Autism Rocks and Rolls ) shared one of the most grounding pieces of advice for parents of kids with autism:
Find what works for you and your child.

There’s no universal blueprint. No one-size-fits-all approach. Every child on the spectrum has their own strengths, sensitivities, and ways of moving through the world — and the real magic happens when parents meet them right where they are.

In our conversation with Sam Mitchell (Autism Rocks and Rolls ) we dug into an idea so many parents need to hear: every single one of us has our own version of neurodiversity. There is no perfect mold. No standard kid. No one “right” way to think, learn, or grow.

Creating communities that accept and celebrate these differences isn’t just helpful — it’s powerful. When we make space for kids to be exactly who they are, without comparison or shame, they thrive. And so do we.

Sam’s perspective reminded us that embracing neurodiversity isn’t about labels…
It’s about belonging.

Did you know kindness literally changes your brain?

Jessie reminded us of something incredibly powerful: kindness isn’t just “being nice.” It’s biology.

When we show kindness, receive kindness, or even simply witness kindness, our brain chemicals shift. Stress lowers. Connection rises. Our sense of safety and belonging expands.

Kindness is true power—and it’s accessible to every single one of us.
And the best part? Our kids feel this shift, too. Their brains respond the same way, making kindness one of the simplest, most impactful tools we can model at home.

If you’ve ever wondered whether small acts matter… the science says absolutely yes.

Jessie shared a moment that stayed with us. Her neighbor told her, “I model kindness to myself for my children, not for me.”

And over time, something beautiful happened—those gentle words began to take root. The kindness she spoke for her kids slowly became kindness she believed about herself.

It’s a reminder every mom needs:
You are worthy. And your children learn their own worth by watching you.

When you show them what self-respect sounds like…
When you let them see you speak lovingly to your body…
When you choose compassion over criticism…

You teach them how to love themselves, too.
