PROTESTERS GATHER IN FONTANA TO OPPOSE TRUMP, ICE
A crowd of local residents gathered outside Fontana City Hall on the cold and windy afternoon of Jan. 10 to express their opposition to the policies of President Donald Trump. They took a stand against the recent killing of Minnesota resident Renee Nicole Good by ICE and against the deaths of other persons nationwide who have perished in ICE custody. In addition, they denounced Trump's military action against Venezuela. This rally was one of more than 1,000 protests that were scheduled to take place in the U.S. during the Jan. 10-11 weekend.

SEVERAL PLAYERS FROM FONTANA SCHOOLS EARN ALL-CIF HONORS
Football players from Fontana A.B. Miller High School and Summit High School received All-CIF honors recently.
At Miller, senior quarterback Jacob Sauceda, senior receiver Stanley Leslie, senior linebacker Adrian Quintana, and senior lineman Ruben Garcia were named to the Division 14 team.
Those players helped the Rebels achieve a tie for first place in the Mountain Valley League last fall. Miller went on to advance to the CIF playoff semifinals before losing a 13-7 heartbreaker to South El Monte, the eventual champion.
Meanwhile, two members of the Summit squad were recognized on the All-CIF Division 6 team. The honorees were junior defensive back Gavin Rister and senior lineman Donovan Amerson. They were instrumental in sparking the SkyHawks to the Sunkist League championship with an overall record of 7-3.

GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS ABOUT JOBS IN LOCAL AREA
There is both good news and bad news about employment in the local area as 2026 gets under way.
The unemployment rate remains relatively low; in fact, the jobless rate in San Bernardino County is 5.3 percent, which is lower than the state overall (5.5 percent), according to the California Employment Development Department (see graphic). These statistics were based on surveys conducted back in November of 2025 because of limited data being released by the federal government recently.
The bad news is that while many workers still have jobs, those who want to try to find a new or better job are having a difficult time, because employers in almost every industry are cutting back on hiring, analysts said.
In a new survey, WalletHub compiled a list of "Best Cities for Jobs (2026)." The report studied 182 of the largest cities in the United States using 31 key factors that shape the strength of local job markets, and Fontana came in at No. 135. In the Inland Empire, Fontana was ranked below Rancho Cucamonga (No. 93), but ahead of Riverside (No. 137), Ontario (No. 153), Moreno Valley (No. 157), and San Bernardino (No. 172). AFFORDABLE HOUSING TO BE BUILT ON FORMER DMV SITE IN FONTANA
A former Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) property in Fontana will be transformed into 128 affordable large-family apartments, officials said.
The 1.57-acre site, located at 16499 Merrill Avenue, will facilitate the construction of homes ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms and one unit for an onsite manager, along with common room facilities and outdoor amenities.
The site will be developed by Homes & Hope, LLC, a California limited liability company, jointly with Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, and Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation.
The income restrictions of the units will be:
-- 32 units at 30 percent average median income
-- 82 units at 50 percent average median income
-- 13 units at 70 percent average median income
The site was selected through California's Surplus Land Initiative, part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement advancing six projects that will create a total of 843 new affordable homes on state-owned land.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity, and I am deeply grateful to the State and our partners for the trust they have placed in us,” said Alexander Russell, Chief Executive Officer of Homes & Hope. “Together, we intend to turn surplus public land into long-term housing stability for Inland Empire families.”
“NPHS has served the Inland Empire for decades, and these sites will allow us to deepen that work,” said Clemente Arturo Mojica, NPHS President and Chief Executive Officer. “By aligning State resources with local and mission-driven partners, we can create homes that support both economic mobility and community resilience.”
“CEDC is honored to bring our service-enriched housing model to these communities,” said Derrick Wada, director of real estate development at CEDC. “Our shared goal is not only to build high quality apartments, but also to foster strong, inclusive communities where residents can thrive.”
No timeline for construction was announced.

The Fontana A.B. Miller boys' soccer team stayed undefeated during the 2025-26 season with a 13-0 victory over Entrepreneur in the league opener on Jan. 7. Team captains Aiden Ibarra and Diego Cercado said they were pleased with the performance of the Rebels, who are 6-0 overall.
"It was a beautiful game," Ibarra said. "We talked well, we had good position, and we worked together well as a team."
Cercado said the key to Miller's success is the coordination between the coaching staff and players. "We come together as a family and push each other," he said.
Coach Jessica Garcia praised all the Rebels for their efforts this season.
"Whether it's a bench player, whether it's a starter, the boys are gelling well," she said.
Miller's wins have included triumphs over two local city rivals -- Kaiser (by a 5-1 score) and Summit (2-1).

FONTANA HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER TEAM PLAYS VERY WELL; SEE VIDEO
The Fontana High School boys' soccer team is playing very well at the start of the 2025-26 season. The Steelers raised their record to 3-1 in league action and 13-3 overall by romping past Bloomington, 9-0 on Jan. 6. Ethan Martinez (pictured, No. 10) scored four goals to lead Fontana, and Josue Hernandez (4) and Luis Ceballos (24) also turned in good performances. The players said they are aiming to maintain their momentum.
"We're all focused and all locked in," Martinez said. "Hopefully we'll make it far this season."
Hernandez said: "We just need to keep the same energy and intensity every game."
"We've had a couple of losses, but the season is going good so far," said Ceballos.
Coach Rigoberto Isarraras was pleased that the Steelers took first place in a prestigious tournament in December, with victories of 3-1 over Villa Park, 1-0 over Roosevelt, and 2-1 over Servite. However, he said the team still has a long way to go.
"We're doing a good job, but still we haven't accomplished anything," he said. "We're just trying to see where the season takes us."

On Jan. 2 at about 5:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Citrus Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, said Public Information Officer Daniel Romero.
During the incident, Justin Chambliss, 24, allegedly rear-ended another vehicle. After the collision, Chambliss exited his vehicle and allegedly pointed a handgun at the victim. The victim fled from the scene, and Chambliss began chasing the victim.

-- ARMED SUSPECT TRIES TO HIDE BUT FALLS THROUGH ROOF
On Jan. 3 at about 12:22 p.m., Fontana P.D. officers and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies received multiple calls regarding a subject identified as Jonathan Lopez, 28, who was reportedly walking around with two fi****ms in his hands, police said.
Multiple officers responded to the area but were unable to locate the subject initially. A short time later, Lopez contacted dispatch and stated that he was in the town homes located just south of the Jack in the Box at Cherry Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.
Fontana P.D. officers and Sheriff’s deputies responded to the location and located Lopez hiding in the attic of one of the newly constructed town homes. While attempting to hide, Lopez fell through the roof and was taken into custody without incident.
During the investigation, officers determined Lopez was on parole. Both handguns were located just south of the Jack in the Box. Each firearm was loaded and equipped with extended magazines. Lopez was arrested, transported, and booked at West Valley Detention Center.
