Arrest made in 2017 Forest City double homicide

On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the Forest City Police Department, with the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), arrested and extradited the suspect in a double homicide that occurred on May 18, 2017.

Jose Angelo Gonzales, 55, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been formally charged with the homicides of Akir Hooper and Stephanie Walker. Following extradition, Gonzales is being held without bond at the Rutherford County Detention Center.

The couple were shot at their residence on Arlington Street in Forest City. Hooper died at his home and Walker died at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

Hooper's sons were at home at the time of the shooting and were able to escape without physical harm.

On May 19, 2017 a neighbor alerted police when two children were observed wandering along Arlington Street. Once police arrived on the scene they found Hooper dead inside the house. Police next found Walker suffering from life-threatening injuries. She died a short time later at the hospital. Both victims, who were in a relationship, had been shot.

Gonzalez was originally arrested March 1, 2022 in connection with the murders.
