“The World of Tomorrow” was a dominant theme of the 1939 – 1940 World’s Fair, which attracted millions of New York residents and tourists to Flushing Meadow for a celebration of technological innovations and cultural history like no other in Queens. It spanned the period of April 30, 1939 to October 27, 1940. Over 44 million visitors attended during both summers. A few years earlier, an ash dump existed.

Since most brilliantly developed pavilions and monuments were planned as temporary structures, today it is unfortunate that very few physical remembrances exist, despite the lack of official landmark designations. Residents who have first-hand memories are diminishing, but linen-era hand-colored postcards among World’s Fair memorabilia in every form is on the rise, whether through postcard shows, eBay, or as a result of cleaning out basements and attics. These valuable keepsakes tell a unique educational story, with hopes that urban planners and individuals spanning every trade and interest, can coordinate a future World’s Fair on site, building upon the success of the more recent 1964 – 1965 World’s Fair.

Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer, often known as Dr. Ruth, “America’s best-loved therapist,” passed away on July 12 at age 96. Throughout her long, meaningful, and unique life, she earned many titles, including s*x therapist, radio and television host, professor, author, and painter, but most of all, she was an educator and an inspiration upon several generations. As an empowering woman of wisdom, one of her numerous quotes was “If you’re facing a problem, don’t tell yourself you can’t do it. Convince yourself that you have the strength to deal with almost anything.”

Public School 175, the Annadale Park School New York City Public Schools and later referenced as the Lynn Gross Discovery School, has been enriching young minds since 1951. Located in a three-story brick and limestone Colonial building with the basement Martha Warner Auditorium and a lunchroom at 64-35 102nd Street, and surrounded by recreation areas, it occasionally accommodates a few generations of local families. Graceful Sycamore trees form a unique skyline around the school and park. The façade also features Greek motifs and complements nearby Colonial rowhouse assemblages. This columnist attended P.S. 175 from 1987 to 1993, and over a week ago, toured the school for the first time since graduation.

Local residents among New Yorkers are increasingly in opposition of the controversial City of Yes for Housing Opportunity proposal, conceived by Mayor Eric Adams and the City Planning Commission. Part 1 of this column series featured perspectives of community leaders from the Forest Hills Community & Civic Association, Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce, and the Forest Hills Van-Court Association. That was followed by part 2, which reflected the positions of residents, including those who testified in front of Community Board 6 at a Land Use and Housing hearing on June 4. The next hearing was held in front of the full board on June 18 at Queens Borough Hall, where CB 6 echoed the voice of the people by voting “No.”

Originating in 1914, Forest Hills Gardens committees and residents coordinated annual Fourth of July Festivals in an exquisitely decorated Station Square, often with additional activities at the Forest Hills Inn and Tea Garden, Olivia Park, Hawthorne Park, and along Greenway Terrace and Flagpole Green, formerly Village Green. Among the most historic Forest Hills events transpired on July 4, 1917, when Colonel Theodore Roosevelt delivered his “One Hundred Percent American” unification speech on a lavish platform affixed to the LIRR Station in front of 5,000 guests, addressing WWI. A year earlier, the official Forest Hills Gardens flag was raised for the first time on the Fourth of July.

Forest Hills Gardens, which was established in 1909, harbors an
extensive history of residents who became known on local to
international levels for their achievements. Back in 1914, the community began coordinating annual large-scale Fourth of July Festivals in an exquisitely decorated Station Square, often with activities at the Forest Hills Inn and Tea Garden, Olivia Park, and along Greenway Terrace and Flagpole Green, formerly Village Green.
One hundred and ten years later, it is time to take a look at three of the community’s well-known artists with patriotic influences, whose success reached far beyond New York. They were Will Phillip Hooper and his wife Annie Betty Blakeslee Hooper of 84 Greenway South, as well as Herman Brown Rountree of 176 Slocum Crescent, but today they are long-forgotten.
