We hear the words somebody says, but we don’t always hear them cleanly. We add our own history, expectations, mood, and whatever happened five minutes ago, then react to the version that landed in our head. Sometimes the problem isn’t what they said at all. It’s everything we accidentally attached to it.

Communication gets weird because what I meant, what I said, and what you heard can somehow become three completely different things. Sometimes nobody is lying, nobody is trying to start a fight, and you still end up having two totally different conversations. That gap between intention and interpretation is where a whole lot of unnecessary bu****it gets born.

Sometimes the people who have known us the longest are still talking to a version of us that hasn’t existed in years.

In this episode of Coffee with Dubs, I’m talking about how family can hold onto old versions of who we were, how easy it is to feel like you’re suddenly twenty again in certain conversations, and the uncomfortable realization that I sometimes do the same thing with my own kids.

People change slowly, which means the people around us don’t always notice every adjustment along the way. The person you remember is still part of who they are, but it may not be the whole person anymore.

The people who really care about you don’t keep score. They don’t tally who called last, who showed up more, or whose turn it is to help. When somebody they care about gets hurt or needs them, they just show up. That’s the kind of friendship worth holding onto.

Sometimes you don’t realize how much people are willing to rearrange for you until life forces the issue. Plans get changed, people pause what they’re doing, and suddenly you see just how much support is actually sitting around you. That kind of thing stays with you.

One thing that really stuck with me after the hospital was watching how quickly the people around me adjusted when I needed them. Plans changed, schedules moved, rides got figured out, and people showed up without making it a whole production. Sometimes you don’t really see the strength of your support system until life suddenly throws everybody’s plans out the window.

Not every good day has to be productive.

In this episode of Coffee with Dubs, I’m talking about taking an unexpected lazy day with my wife, getting completely sucked into Sheriff Country, and realizing that sometimes the thing you need most is a break from trying to accomplish something.

When you’re used to creating, posting, planning, and always thinking about what comes next, even relaxing can start to feel like another task. Yesterday reminded me that spending a day doing almost nothing with someone you love is not wasted time.

Sometimes the plan really is to have no plan at all.

Maybe rest isn’t about escaping your life for a week. Maybe it’s learning that every open hour doesn’t need to be filled just because you found one. Some things can wait until tomorrow, and sometimes choosing not to do everything is exactly what you needed.

Sometimes life decides to hit the brakes for you. You can have a hundred things that need to get handled, but eventually you have to accept that you’re one person and everything isn’t getting done today. Apparently the hospital gown is just life’s very fashionable way of making that point.
