You may hear doulas talk about ‘holding space,’ but what does it really mean?

Holding space is about being fully present with you — without judgment, without agenda, without trying to fix or control your experience.

It’s listening deeply, honoring your choices, and creating a safe container for whatever emotions, fears, or joys arise.

It’s making sure you feel fully informed and aware when options are presented to you.

It’s making sure you feel in charge in that delivery room.

When we hold space, we show up with calm, support, and trust in your process.

It’s not about doing it for you, and it’s not about just witnessing your process. It’s about being with you in the most gentle, empowering way possible.

Whether it’s labor, birth, or postpartum, holding space allows you to feel seen, heard, and cared for exactly as you are. 💛

Did you know PBC is in a documentary?! It’s called Fear and Now by Liat Ron.

This full-length film highlights the challenges of modern birth in America and how we can combat them. It includes doulas, educators, OBs, midwives, and birthing people from all over the country (including 3 PBC clients!!) through their birthing journeys and beyond.

We’re so proud to be hosting an exclusive screening of Fear and Now at our favorite local theater: The Lyric!

Join us Sunday, October 26th at 3pm to watch the film and then enjoy a Q&A with some key players in the film from right here in Colorado.

Get your $10 ticket at the link in our bio!

QUESTION 6: What does shared decision-making look like with your patients?

This question reveals if they prioritize informed consent and empowering you as the expert of your birth.

As someone mentioned on the Question 2 post, this question can be in reference to inductions / intervenes, but it can be about SOOOOO MANY other things too.

It also opens up the conversation about partners / families / doulas and the role you want them to play in decision making.

QUESTION 5: How do you support birthing people’s mental health during pregnancy and postpartum?

A must-ask for whole-person care. This is one of the most under-served areas in maternal care.

Ensuring you have a robust team of advocates keeping an eye on you and actually SEEING you goes a long way.

QUESTION 4: What’s your approach to pain management options—both medical and non-medical?

This gauges whether they respect diverse coping strategies. If they respond with something like “oh I don’t know why anyone would do it without an epidural!” or “I think a warm bath should be enough.”, that tells you that they may have a preference of supporting a particular type of birth, which may influence their suggestions.

An ideal response would be something like “I support you using whatever pain management strategies sound best to you in the moment. I’m always happy to explain the benefits and risks of any options you’re interested in.”
