Did you know PBC is in a documentary?! It’s called Fear and Now by Liat Ron.

This full-length film highlights the challenges of modern birth in America and how we can combat them. It includes doulas, educators, OBs, midwives, and birthing people from all over the country (including 3 PBC clients!!) through their birthing journeys and beyond.

We’re so proud to be hosting an exclusive screening of Fear and Now at our favorite local theater: The Lyric!

Join us Sunday, October 26th at 3pm to watch the film and then enjoy a Q&A with some key players in the film from right here in Colorado.

QUESTION 6: What does shared decision-making look like with your patients?

This question reveals if they prioritize informed consent and empowering you as the expert of your birth.

As someone mentioned on the Question 2 post, this question can be in reference to inductions / intervenes, but it can be about SOOOOO MANY other things too.

It also opens up the conversation about partners / families / doulas and the role you want them to play in decision making.

QUESTION 5: How do you support birthing people’s mental health during pregnancy and postpartum?

A must-ask for whole-person care. This is one of the most under-served areas in maternal care.

Ensuring you have a robust team of advocates keeping an eye on you and actually SEEING you goes a long way.

QUESTION 4: What’s your approach to pain management options—both medical and non-medical?

This gauges whether they respect diverse coping strategies. If they respond with something like “oh I don’t know why anyone would do it without an epidural!” or “I think a warm bath should be enough.”, that tells you that they may have a preference of supporting a particular type of birth, which may influence their suggestions.

An ideal response would be something like “I support you using whatever pain management strategies sound best to you in the moment. I’m always happy to explain the benefits and risks of any options you’re interested in.”

QUESTION 3: How do you involve partners / support people during labor?

This ensures that your team is part of the process, not sidelined. It also opens up the conversation about advocacy and working as a cooperative unit.

Your partner and support people are crucial in terms of you feeling safe. Your provider can include them in ways that empower them AND you, increasing feelings of safety and calm, which can reduce potential trauma.

QUESTION 2:

What is your induction and intervention rate?

Transparency here shows how often they use medical interventions, whether you want them or not. It also highlights their preferred level of control in different settings.

For context, induction rates for first time birth givers in the US rose to a staggering 43% in 2020. More than half of those were elective, meaning they weren’t medically necessary.

Induction isn’t inherently bad, many people prefer that option. But the point is that they have an OPTION. Knowing if your provider pushes inductions because they like the control is a helpful tool in decision making.

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PROVIDER!

We’ll start with #1 today and share a question every day for 10 days. Ideally, these questions will help you understand if your provider is the best fit for you.

If you don’t have the option to change providers, these questions can help you get on the same page.

QUESTION 1: How do you support physiologic birth?

This helps you uncover their philosophy on birth and their comfort level in trusting the process.

Everyone may have a different definition of “physiologic birth” or maybe you are planning an induction or c section. If needed, you can replace physiologic with whatever type of birth you’re hoping for.

Come back tomorrow for question 2!

Birth is basically surfing…
You can’t control the waves, but you can learn how to ride them.

Birth class = surf school for your uterus / brain.

We’ll teach you to paddle, breathe, and not panic when the big ones roll in. 🌊

From the 1700s to the 1970s (80s even?!) partners were told to wait at the pub until the baby arrived. What a shame!

Today? We encourage partners to:

✔ Breathe with you
✔ Advocate for you
✔ Squeeze your hips
✔ Keep the snacks flowing
✔️ Witness your power without needing to “do” anything

Then we can all enjoy a celebratory drink afterwards. 🍻😉
